Hope everyone enjoyed the photos. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA West Virginia - Need help - Guest - 03-21-2008 Mike, spectacular material as always! I have the Elkins Ford Louisville/American as a 1970, 1000/750 and the IH CO8190/Pirsch as a 1963, 750/500. There is a factory shot and an interesting caption concerning this rig on pg. 73 of the Pirsch Fire Apparatus Photo archive book by Iconografix. When I first saw Elkins back in 1983, the station's rigs had 4 different paint schemes and the 81 IH/Pierce was the newest! I think it is Star City, WV that had the old 1969? Sutphen tower, but I think they replaced it last year. Interesting that Elkins has the x-Burtonsville squad now. Warren Jenkins I suppose this is what the x-Burtonsville squad replaced: 1979 Chev. For those who do not have the Pirsch book, in a nutshell Pirsch sold the truck to Sutphen as a "demonstrator". At that time, Sutphen was a sales agent and distributor for Pirsch. It was then sold to Elkins. Very unusual. Yes, it is Morgantown, NC and not Florida. The guys at the station specifically mentioned North Carolina. My apologies....I had Florida on the mind from the Sutphen tower at Elkins. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA West Virginia - Need help - Guest - 03-22-2008 Man why didn't you tell me you were in town I could have taken you for a little tour of Mason Co! First the black Pirsch is owned by Finley fire equipment in McConnellsville, Oh. a Pierce dealer. It was so I was told the first truck Finley sold and they bought it back and refurbed it. Elkins has come a long way looks like. Now, Point Pleasant, that building is the old EMS station. They have moved and we inherited that crap hole! <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> We run 2 stations the other was our main and is it the city building. It houses now a Pierce/international 1000/1000 and 2 boats. The trucks in the picture are as follows; Quality/FL 70 1250/1000 Pierce 55' snorkel 1000/500 bought from Finley fire who got it on a trade from Trotwood Twp. Oh. EVI/International rescue bought from some dept in Pa. near the KME plant. If so we cover all that from the state line to the Putnam Co. line. We run with the Winfield (Putnam Co.) as M/A As for the city area we have pretty much an auto response with the Gallipolis, OH. FD right across the Silver bridge you passed. Valleys a good group of guys! We cover Rt. 2 S to their area. I worked Cabell Co EMS for 11 years and know a lot of the fellas at ORR. Those guys really do well and bring the cash in. Never understood why the don't have a fleet of new rides with the money they bring in. That area has seen some massive highway upgrading, including the "Corridor H" Interstate project. When I visited EFD in 1983, the rescue was yellow, and besides the previously mentioned older rigs, there was also a IH Loadstar/American tanker which I only have a poor dupe slide of. (same with the 84 IH/Pierce eng.) Photograph taken in August 1976 Mike Sanders collection Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA[/quote] Mike, Tower 2 is a 1967 International CO8190/Sutphen 1000/250. I had it as a 75'? According to a Sutphen delivery list, it was the 8th tower that Sutphen built and was purchased new by Elkins. When I was last in Elkins back in 1998, I photographed the current tower and it was numbered 401 and did not have the ladder board. They also had a Haz-Mat vehicle, which I did not see and was told it was a beverage type truck that Elkins purchased 1997-98 also from Altamonte Springs, FL. I was told it was still painted white & red. If you didn't see it on your recent trip, I'm wondering if Elkins ever put it in service? On my first trip to Elkins back in 1984, there also was E6, a 1976 International L1700/1969 Sutphen front mount pumper, 500/750 painted solid white. I was traveling all over the state that week, so I really do not recall which way I came in. I do remember a larger pond with railroad tracks near it that was close to Point Pleasant. Maybe Ron could confirm the ladder size. A solid white truck at Elkins - more color variety. The HAZMAT truck was there. I was told it will be replaced. I did not get photos - it puts out alot of smoke (I mean exhaust) when starting it up. It did come from Altamonte Springs, brought home the same time when the tower was purchased. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA West Virginia - Need help - Guest - 03-22-2008 Pond! Thats no pond! Its Krodel lake!! <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Actually the lake was made from the dirt being removed to build the over head earthen train tressel you passed under. It was a depression works project so the old times tell me. Dates off hand, the quality is a 1996 it was what I call a coffee table spec&bid. One of our members brothers was selling Quality at the time and well we needed a truck you see! E one is a 1998 or 99 this one had an actual bid process and I was on the party. I really tried to make a decent fire truck out of it. But when the meeting opens with, and I quote "I don' care whats it gots long as it has u Q!" Well its a nice water hauler with a Q <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='<_<' /> The snorkel had a Hendrickson cab and was refurbed by Trotwood back, I think in the late 80's. We had a Pierce Tele squirt that the city/county bought in 1976. A great truck! Pretty cutting edge I'd say as it came with a foam system. Well the chief at the time would not allow anyone to drive it except him self and his son! So it sat and sat! It made all the big fires in Pt. Pleasant and Gallipolis in its day. Was even called to Ripley, WV once which is about 30 miles NE. Anyway, it fell apart and I spearheaded a project to replace it. Had city and county attention and even state level assistance with some extra cash. I was working on an E One 110' out of MD, can't remember the dept but they had just bought a new ladder and this one was sitting in the station not being used! As usual I got dry humped by my fellow members, our boy chief found the truck at Finley fire. They pulled the "you better buy it now, another dept. is ready to sign papers on it!" So with visions of Q sirens and mars lights flashing in his boy brain he came wheeling into town in the snorkel. I'll try and drum up some info for you sometime. I don't get around the station much as it really upsets me to see the way things operate now. So much cash blown and no one held accountable. Like on the "new" station So I have a project for all you! Point Pleasant had, I can't remember the brand. Either a Seagrave or Pirsch built in the 1930's that we still have the bell off of. Would anyone have any info in their records? Mike, While you were at Valley did they still have the old 40's model open cab? These got this truck which was an old City of Huntington truck with the idea of resorting it. It sat by the road for about a year in the weather and now I don't know if they moved it inside or what happened to it.
