Last photo from Duck, and I do not believe this is an actual FD unit (I may be wrong). Marked as "Surf Rescue", this is a typical surf rescue unit that you will find at many of the beaches along the Outer Banks.

2005 GMC Pick Up.

One other item I forgot to mention - the Duck station apron also serves as a helicopter landing zone area and is marked as such.

Future postings will be of Southern Shores VFD, which is also located along and close to Route 12.

Any corrections and additional information is welcomed.

Thanks,

Another interesting feature of the Pierce tower is that the pump controls are in the compartment on the drivers side !!

What are the Two Tanks above the Side Panel??

Excellent job Mike, seeing the various types of units operated down there is cool. Certainly getting a group shot of Duck's Pierce Tower and Engine would be awesome to say the very least!

It's only a single tank, the "second tank" is just a reflection of the first. It appears to be part of a stored-air CAFS system.

As I recall, there are two tanks. The Assistant Chief mentioned to me that these can supply air to the pump operators who would put on masks when operating in a hazardous environment.

On ducks tower 11 is the pump panel on the passengers side? i dont see one on the drivers side and for 2000 gpm it would be pretty big.

Outer Banks, North Carolina - Department profiles - Rob Pryor - 09-07-2006

Mike,

Great pics, I have been to the outer banks several times over the past years and really enjoyed the quiet unspoiled beaches. Any chance you got down to Ocracoke Island....I have never actually seen their station, let alone their apparatus.

Thanks,

Rob

PS I haven't forgotten your request for the Five Points Maxim pic, I just honestly haven't been able to get the time to send it!!!!!!

It doesn't appear to have the pump panel on the officers side.

This should answer anymore posts on where the pump panel is located !

Quote:Old Truck 11 was this 1987 Duplex/Grumman 102' with a 1500/300. It has Grumman s/n 17297.

This Grumman was sold in 2003 when Duck took delivery of their new tower. The information I have is that it was sold to Oak Ridge, North Carolina. Could any of our NC firepic members confirm that?

I can. Jon and I shot it there a couple years ago (2004).

The two NFPA required pull out steps on the driver side should be a clue that there's an operators panel somewhere near there too. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />

Rob,

Yes, I did get to Ocracoke Island several years ago and photographed their apparatus. I will include them after Dare County. Although they are in Hyde County, North Carolina, they are definitely considered on North Carolina's Outer Banks. I had an excellent opportunity to photograph the rigs with great cooperation from the FD. I think you will like them.

Appreciate the Five Points Maxim.

the utility is painted a different color as i recall because it was bought as a demo

I appreciate everyone's input with questions, comments, information, etc.

Sorry for the "delay" in continuing the Outer Banks posts.

I will pick up where we left off from - Duck, North Carolina in Dare County.

The Town of Southern Shores borders Duck to the south. This community is predominately residential with a larger retirement community. The town occpies about 4 square miles. Southern Shores borders the Town of Kitty Hawk, with Highway 158 as the dividing line between the two towns.

Southern Shores has two stations. The main station is just after you cross over the Wright Brothers bridge that brings you from Currituck County into Dare County. Southern Shores second station is located along Route 12 as you head towards Duck.

Start of the the Southern Shores insignia that is found on a variety of the apparatus.

This is old Engine 121, a 1971 Ford F750/John Bean 750/750. This is no longer in service. Sorry, no serial number.

The 1971 Ford was replaced with this brand new 2006 International 4400/KME 1500/500/30. It carries KME serial number 6163.

Southern Shores carryies some interesting radio designations. You will notice the "T121" on the International hood. This KME is also referred to as Truck 121 because it carries some extrication equipment. I was also told it will mark up as Engine 121.

Another pumper that I believe is no longer in service with Southern Shores. I did not see it when I visited within the past month.

Truck 122 is a 1982 Ford F800/FMC Roughneck that was rehabed in 1994 by Metal Craft. 1000/750. No serial number.

Sothern Shores purchased a couple of top mounted Emergency One pumpers.

Engine 123 is a 1989 Emergency One Hush 1500/750, with serial number 7482.
