At that point this post will include pictures of every AFD front line Engine, Truck, and most supression special service (Rescue Squad, Hazmat, Hazmat Support) unit. The two special service units I do not have shots of are the Mass Casualty Unit which someone else has posted and the Mobile Air Unit 203. I need to try to get shots of that next trip. If anyone has a shot of it please add it to the mix. I will then try to do a single post on ladder storage for each of the 8 front line Engines and a post showing all front line Engines together, all Trucks together, and all front line special units together. Alexandria, VA Fire Department - davemcclung - 09-26-2007
what is that thing above the ladder on E 201 for?
It is a small little coffin compartment for storage of equipment like you see on a lot of rigs today, though most of them you see have ladder racks or are full depth rescue engines with the ladders coming off the back of the rig. You can see from the pictures that on Engine 208 the compartment while still small is a little deeper. The compartments above the ladders on 201 is not very deep and I suspect shovel handles and other small items are carried up there. One could make an argument that it is good use of wasted space or that there isn’t enough space for a change of underware much less any equipment. I wish the comment about a change of underware was an original joke but it isn’t as this conversation has come up when I have talked to guys who operate apparatus with similar setups to Engine 201 when I have asked about what equipment is stored up there. You will note Lime that Engine 202 does not have that same coffin compartment above the ladder rack . I don't think I have any pictures of any of the old pumpers. Only pumpers I have are the old KME's which I will scan and post soon. I know what Lime is saying about glorydays and running Lime but when you look at the apparatus Alexandria has purchased in the last 30 years today truly is the glory days for the department. All of their fontline fleet is modern functional and at least for the pumpers....Pierce! ;-) Alexandria, VA Fire Department - davemcclung - 09-30-2007 Scans of AFD's 1863 Amoskeag Steamer Engine Alexandria, VA Fire Department - davemcclung - 09-30-2007 Alexandria, VA Fire Department - davemcclung - 09-30-2007 Here are a few historical scans....
