We don't have much choice in the matter. Ford no longer makes a Type3 diesel ambulance chassis, and the Chevy Express is unacceptable for our needs. These two IH/Hortons are remounts of 2006 bodies, as the construction of the Horton ambulance module has been found to be much more durable than any we have ever purchased. Also, the cost of ownership on the medium duty chassis is much less over its lifetime. In case anyone's unsure about them in a city, Boston has been running medium duty chassis for many years now. I love driving them, the turning radius is phenomenal compared to the Fords.

Boston has had a ton of success with the GMC/Brauns. They of course got rid of the air lowering system and went with a custom lower suspension of some sort. I think the medium duty chassis will work fine and they sure look better then the smaller ones. Any idea where they will be assigned? Also I've never understood why our ambulances are never purchased with lightbars, I assumed it was to cut costs, any insight?

We have not identified the final assignments of the medium duty ambulances yet. I can tell you that we have taken delivery of EMS2 and EMS8, and soon EMS7- all 2010 Tahoes. Very soon we will have new BFC1, BFC5 & BFC6 in 2010 Suburban 2500s. Also, the new Car10 has been placed in service with a 2010 2500HD, as have both Arson K9s and the USAR K9.
The no-lightbar issue continues to grind my gears. No answers, just that's the way it is. At least we have doubled the LEDs and gotten CPI speakers instead of the plastic cones on the Wheeled Crap units.

One of nine 750-gpm Ford/ Ward LaFrances delivered in 1971 and rebuilt by Young Fire Apparatus is seen here c. 1980, turning north out of the house toward Krupin’s (Morty’s) and a real Reuben.
Toojay’s, Krupin’s, and, the current appellation, Morty’s. However, Morty Krupin has retired and some have opined that the “Morty’s” name should be changed. However, Dave, if you are ever in the Fifth Battalion (as close to Minnesota as DC gets), swing by Wisconsin Ave. & Brandywine Sts. NW. The fact that Morty’s accepts reservations for the seating area affirms your hunger for that Reuben (with a free bowl of kosher pickles on the table) is well founded.

Speaking of RS-2, here’s a pic of Rescue Squad 1 running with RS-2’s old piece. S-603 went in service June, 1998 with a1984 E\-One body (xRS-2), retrofitted by Saulsbury onto a 1997 Freightliner FL 60. This apparatus ran as Rescue Squad 2 from 1998 to 2001, and as a reserve since then. August 6, 2010 fireground, 30th and M St. NW.
