1. Volunteer purchased apparatus must meet the county minimum spec and be approved by the Apparatus Section.
2. There are 4 hazmat rescue companies that operate as satellites to the main Hazmat and Hazmat Support unit and each of those rescue companies are staffed with 4 hazmat qualified personnel. Rescue 1, 11, 19 and 26 are the HM rescues and carry a limited amount of protective clothing above structural firefighting gear, some leak and spill control equipment and atmospheric monitoring devices. Typical hazmat response is two engine companies, the closest hazmat rescue company, the hazmat unit and hazmat support unit, an ALS transport unit, BC, EMS supevisor and safety officer.
3. There are 4 technical rescue companies: 14, 18, 21 and 39 staffed with 4 tech rescue personnel each. Stations 14 and 21 have the "cave-in" trailers and tow vehicles which carry the pneumatic shores, dewatering pumps and support gear for trench rescue and other collapse operations. FS18 has the Technical Rescue Support Unit which has pavement breakers and other heavy tools on it. I don't get out to the 1st Battalion much anymore so I can't honestly say what Rescue 39 has extra.

Thanks guys for all of the information on the rigs and details about operations...Wealth of information available on this site.
I hoped to get E407-B, the ex-McLean Pierce, but it was on the rack in the shop and unavailable.

GREAT SHOT!! I am a big fan of the older E\-One rigs Fairfax ran. To compare the size and wheelbase to the current rigs is striking to say the least...

This might be a ridiculous question, but is it possible to take the roto rays off of the older reserve units and put them on the new trucks? Also, after reading of the station collapse, did Ladder 10 sustain any damage?
Gotcha....thanks. What became of the Pierce Lance formerly E401? Didn't it have an engine problem?

This is now E407-B at the academy. It was on the rack with various fluids coming from below when I visited Friday. From what everyone says, it does have a myriad of mechanical issues.

That Pierce that Mclean use to run as Engine 1 was HUGE!

McLean VFD's 1997 Pierce Lance (lot's of memories on this rig) was rode hard for many years (lots of trips out to the Beltway, GW Parkway) before it went to the Academy as the "B" engine. McLean VFD had just purchased the big tandem axle heavy rescue and did not have funds to procure a new engine so a deal was struck with FRD for the swap. I imagine she is going to be retired soon since there are three wagons coming in from Pierce later this year. I'm sure the Academy will be back to getting another hand-me down based on the current doom-and-gloom budget projections.
Both of 10's rigs, the County-owned ladder and the Volunteer owned wagon have returned from inspection and service from Pierce.
As for removing Roto-Rays from older rigs and putting them on the new ones, it won't happen; there are factions within the Apparatus Committee that abhor, hate, disdain (pick one) the Roto-Ray.
We (the fire service) are quickly approaching a point where tradition (fun ones like Roto-Rays, red rigs; not the risky ones) means very little to those making the decisions which makes me glad I have less than two years until I'm completely retired.
Here is a picture of Ex Engine 427 the one that I think was one of the sweetest engines of its time after its 1993-94 rehab. Love the look of the light bar and cab. It was exchanged with Sperrysville VA in order to get the old E24 back. E24 was the first engine purchased by the Fairfax County Government and they wanted it back, so the trade was made.
Now privately owned. Taken at the Louisa County VA Parade July 2010
Great shot as always Mike if you ever sold your photo collection on DVDs I be the first to buy a complete set. The fire photo book you and Peter West did is AWESOME.
And yes, some years, it does rain at Apple Blossom (where this was taken).

Since I don't have to ride or operate any of the current Fairfax Engines I don't have much right to voice this opinion but if it WERE up to me I would take the above E27 over any of the current rigs in a new york minute...
