Fairfax County VA

Ok, next question. Paul & Nate don't jump in yet, give others a chance to answer. How many fire stations are there in the "Great State of Fairfax County"?

From memory I can come up with:

FCFRD - 37

Ft Belvior - 3 (?)

MWAA - 1

Mt Vernon - 1

My guesstimate is 42....

There are 34 County stations located in Fairfax. Vienna, Herndon, and Clifton are independent towns that are considered separate political entites from their surrounding county/citys. Uncle Sam operates 3 Belvoir and 1 Mt. Vernon Estates. John Foster Dulles Airport has one station located within Fairfax.

How many old house are still standing in Fairfax ?

I am going to assume, and therefore answer if Paul is asking how many active stations there are in Fairfax County.

My answer: It depends. As rpfleer points out there are several indpendent agencies (ie MWAA, Mount Vernon, and Fort Belvoir - US Army) in Fairfax County. He also correctly points out that through the incredibly screwed up (in my opinion) way Virginia incorporates it's cities you can have indpendent cities that are not considered part of any County subdivision. That is why the City of Alexandria has a police department and a sheriff department and Arlington County has a police and a sheriff department. So is Paul's question inclusive of the Virginia method of indpendent city incorporation or not......that is why my answer depends.....

If you take the political subdivision organization into consideration the answer is:

1 MWAA at Dulles (barely in FFX County)

1 Mount Vernon (1 station)

4 Fort Belvoir (4 fire stations) there is one EMS Station but Paul's question said fire stations so I am disregarding the EMS Station at Belvoir

34 FFX County FRD stations within the confines of the County (excludes FFX City 403, 433, Vienna 402, Hernon 404, and Clifton 416).

Total 40

Now if you going by the lose interpetation that anything within the outer boarders of FFX County is in the county, including independent cities.....

The answre is 40 plus 5 = 45.

Additional correction

Uncle Sam does "not" operate the Fire Station at Mount Vernon Estate - it is operated by the employees of the estate, and actually funded by the Mount Vernon Estate Ladies Auxillary Foundation, no federal money goes into any portion of the operations there. And through a long-standing relationship with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, they have received various pieces of apparatus as "donations" that would have been otherwise disposed of.

Old Stations - vacated old stations - McLean, Fairfax, Mount Vernon, Penn Daw, Chantilly, Gunston, Navy Vale

Fairfax City is technically located within Fairfax County and bring two additional fire stations to the math. The City of Falls Church (originally FS06 in the county system) was originally in Fairfax County but are now under ACFD and they have an old fire house too. The Fire Academy is technically Fire Station 7 so that might change up the math a little bit.

Falls Church lost their house when the new one was built. The rear entrance is off of Lee Hwy. where the old station stood. It was interesting to watch Trk-76 back into the stations narrow doors, blocking all four lanes of Lee Hwy.

Thanks for posting this. Man, back then Chantilly and Centreville were cow towns! I grew up in Box 1617 through the 70's and 80's. So much has changed...

Thanks again!

[/quote]The station actually has two addresses - one for Little Falls Road and one for Lee Highway. If you enter off Lee Hwy, you will be turning into the Front of the station. If you enter from Little Falls Road, you'll be entering from the rear.

No matter which way you enter if you look at an ADC map it is just inside the Arlington County line.
