Yes that was true for our Original Snorkel Squads as well which originally ran with both a "Snorkel Squad' apparatus and a Fog Pressure pumper (with a 300 gallon water tank and 2 High Pressure Fog booster lines) as their second piece and therefore ran with 7 man crews as the driver of the Fog Pressure had to be an Engineer.

Snorkel Squad 1 went in service in 1962 while Snorkel Squad 2 went in service in 1963 and Snorkel Squad 3 went in service in 1965 (using the Original GMC/Pittman 50 ft.1958 model Snorkel.

In early 1969 Snorkel Squads 2 and 3 were taken out of service in order to save the city money in a manpower reallignment.Snorkel Squad 1 remained in service until 1980 but had it's Fog Pressure apparatus replaced in the mid 70's with Ford/Pierce medium duty rescue squad as it's second piece.

Today's 3 Squad "Snorkel" company's didn't go into service until September of 1983 when the Fire Department consolidated 3 of our conventional Snorkel Company's and 3 of our conventional Squad company's into combined Squad "Snorkel"companies as an "efficiency move" to also save money, as the Squad and Snorkel company's weren't that busy at the time.

Three of our four Squads run with a HME/Central States Snorkel rig with a 55 foot Snorkel on it as the second piece.Four men usually ride in the first piece which is an HME/Central States box style (walk through) Rescue Squad and two men usually ride in the second piece with the Snorkel on it.

Our fourth Squad is number 7 assigned to O'Hare International Airport at Crash Station 3 just south east of the domestic terminals off of a service road.Squad 7 runs with a Large Pierce (Walk Through) Heavy Rescue Squad with tandem rear axles.It also runs a second piece which is a small Ford/Pierce mini foam pumper which can be used in the muiti story parking lot or in other tight situations.To my knowledge four or five men ride on the Heavy Rescue (first piece) and one or two men ride on the second piece when they respond to an alarm.Even though Squad 7 is painted lime yellow and was paid for by the FAA (Federal Aviation Adminstration) is does have a very small area on the Far NorthWest Side of Chicago proper where it does respond on working fires and special duty calls.Squad 7 sometimes responds even further into the City when special called on "Foam Task Force" incidents which also includes Engine 9 or 10 from O'Hare Field (due to their 210 gallon Foam Tanks on board and a Crash Wagon from O'Hare is also dispatched as part of the Foam Task Force.

Squad 7 also is due on some Mutual Aide Boxes in some of the suburbs near O"Hare Field.

To my knowledge all of the Squads run with 6 men assigned. I don't know if an Engineer is assigned to Squad 7's second piece but I have my doubts about it.

We don't have any regular Snorkel Company's anymore however. When a Large (85 foot) Snorkel is needed Reserve Snorkel 1 responds from(Engine 35 and Truck 28's)quarters with either Engine 35 or Truck 28 accompanying it to the scene with a driver detailed from either the Engine or the Truck as the Snorkel is not ordinarily manned. Reserve Snorkel 1 is a 1982 Seagrave/Pierce 85 footer that was in full service for only about a year when our regular Snorkel company's were taken our of service in September of 1983.

When we ran with regular Snorkel company's they usually ran with three men on them as they were only dispatched on what you would call extra alarms or special duty (rescue incidents) where the Snorkel boom would most likely be needed.Unlike many other City's at the time Chicago never ran our Snorkels as Truck Company's.Our Snorkels were always specialty companys.Most city's that ran with Snorkels ran them as Truck company's as Philadelphia still does. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/drrescue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Drrescue' />
