So is Bravo unit like ready reserve rig, or second rig out, or do is it set up where they rotate between the two rigs as first out?

I believe most of the Bravo units are staffed and run by volunteers as ready to run pieces........

Bravo engines are owned and staffed by the vollies. They go in service mainly weekends to fill career engines out for training. Also, second or greater alarms to fill empty stations anywhere in the county, they are not confined to the station of origin. Bad weather will also place them in service.

Since they are ready reserve, on rare occasions when there are no reserves, they can be used as frontline engines.



Tim, Open House is Sat 15, Oct, if you want a good pic of R421 & TR421. E421B is scheduled to be in Herndon most of the day for a Public Safety PR event.

Request for those who are going to be in FFX on October 15th please take pictures of the open houses and post your pictures on-line. A Picture of the inside of TR421 would be appreciated.

I will dovetail in here with a brief history lesson. Prior to the entire metro-DC area fire service making the migration to the COG designators, the Fairfax County volunteer-staffed units were designated with the leading digit being an 8 rather than the Fairfax County 4. The career staffed engine company at FS22 would be on the air as E422 while the volunteer staffed engine company would be known on the air as Engine 822 with the same logic applied to other functions in combination career-volunteer houses (BLS and ALS transport units). After Prince George's County (MD) adopted use of "8" as their COG radio designator i.e., Engine 812 from College Park, Fairfax County along with many of the other jurisdictions (Montgomery County in Maryland, Loudon and Prince William Counties in Virginia) with active volunteer departments in the COG region were forced to address how the "second out" piece from a station with multiple engines or multiple ALS/BLS transport units would be recognized. A number of factors had to be considered such as lettering of apparatus as well as software limitations for existing CAD systems before the "Bravo" solution was agreed upon by all the COG signatories.



And as an FYI, College Park (MD) VFD has inked a deal with Pierce for an Arrox XT 1250 gpm/500gal pumper and that Prince George's County has added on to the Arlington County FD Pierce order for 5-6 Pierce Arrow XT pumpers and two Arrow XT 105' RM ladders, one possibly going to College Park.

The 800 engine numbering was easy to understand ie: 801, 802, 821. The 890 designation for EMS was confusing because they didn't match the station numbers, ie: A890 ran from FS21. Now EMS units match station #'s. If there are not two FF's on board, it is a ECHO (A421E) unit and does not get dispatched to fires.

I know the career guys at 17 (Centreville) run the "Bravo" Engine fairly frequently when their frontline Dash is OOS - but as previously mentioned that may or may not be contingent upon the availability of a rig from the reserve E\-One fleet. The rig reads "417B", but when used by the career folks it is still referred to on the radio/CAD as "Engine 417" (I apologize if I'm stating redundant information). .

To the best of my knowledge Prince William County is the only regional jurisdiction that uses the "Bravo" term WHEN operating an actual Bravo (backup) designated rig. I believe all others only use it when 2 Engines are being run at the same time (PG County for example). Not sure about Loudoun, as the last time I listened to their radio comms they were still using the "Wagon and Engine" unit terminology. Corrections welcome!

  • New FS12 should be open by 11-01-2011.

  • Four new pumpers on the way from Appleton. I have no idea on the chassis or spec but expect similar to what was recently purchased. Unless something drastically changes between now and delivery, they are going to 18, 23, 24 and 29.

  • Draft plans for FS04 and FS10 under review.


This will probably work anywhere but if I wanted to photograh some nicely posed fire trucks I would strongly consider...
  • Pre-planning: Pick the spot that you think would make a good back drop in that company's first-due area or very close to it. Factor in the time of day and sunlight. My fire house sucks to take a pic of the rig on the front ramp in the morning. Granted, this isn't always possible if you are making your maiden trip to photograph these rigs but a little forethought goes a long way.

  • Call the fire station; just about every fire station has a phone number on the web somewhere. Ask for the officer in charge and try to schedule it, make sure there won't be conflicts with what's on their schedule for the day.

  • Bribery goes a long way: Offer digital copies of the pictures to the fire station for their web site (if they have one). Ice cream is to firefighters as donuts are to law enforcement.

Have one of the new Pierce Pumpers changed designations.I was told from apparatus division they were going to Engine 418,421,423 & 429.I wasnt aware that 24 was to recieve one.?

I was at 30s on Sunday. We were talking about the new rigs and where they were scheduled to go. 423 is running with 430s old rig which is still in pretty good shape. They said the rumor mill was one of the new rigs was going to 423 but that might or might not make sense. I had heard 18, 21, 29 for certain from multiple sources.



Also the plan is still to replace the rearmount towers in the near future.



Pictures of E439, 430 and Station 412 and the Station 442 site coming this weekend once I get a chance to download them from my camera.



Oh and I thought I heard that 402 is going to be getting a new Engine similar to the 421B with a black over red color scheme, anyone hear this as well?

No more rearmount Towers and current rearmounts up for sale (according to a source on TL430). Too many accidents and too much ass-end. Engine 423 currently happy with 30's old rig. FS23 soon to be a county owned house. Engine 402 to soon be replaced, though they still love their current Bravo rig. Not sure on the color scheme. I for one am very sad to see FS4 be replaced.... lets hope 18 hangs in there. Love that house.
