Amtrak is running a special train around the country to mark the railroad's 40th anniversary. The train was in Providence Station this weekend so I spent about an hour checking things out.

Metro North BL14 #402 &401 used in the East Side Access construction project to bring LIRR into Grand Central. The units were made by Brookville Locomotive, and have 2 700 HP gensets. These units are used to haul rock/debris from new tunnels and cavern being constructed underneath Grand Central terminal.

Last week on vacation my fiancee and I took Amtrak's Southwest Chief from Chicago to Flagstaff, AZ, which uses the BNSF Transcon Route. Through New Mexico parts of the line is still protected by semaphore signals.

The westbound Chief was led by Engine 184, one of four locomotives repainted by Amtrak into one of its four "heritage" schemes to celebrate Amtrak's 40th Anniversary of service. This was the Phase IV paint scheme used by Amtrak before its current Phase V paint, shot during a station stop at Kansas City, MO.

Metro North Bl-20GH #128 and #127 elephant style thru Pawling, NY. Metro North usually puts one engine put train, but they have been having compressor problems on these units of late.

I have had a lot more luck shooting trains than fire trucks these days. Doesn't anyone hang out at the firehouse anymore?

I grabbed this early evening shot of this UP auto rack train running through Whitesboro NY last night.

Three of the railroads that currently run through Utica NY are pictured here, along with some railroading history. Adirondack Scenic RR 1502, an EMD F10 built in 1947 switches cars in the yard, Mohawk Adirondack & Northern 805 an Alco C425 built in 1964 waits while CSX 3048, a GE ES44AC-H built within the last couple of years flies by.
