Wow, this has got to be the nicest DFD fleet in the history of the department. My best guess would be Truck 8 if it's a straight stick or Tower 27 if they order another bucket.

Castlewood Rescue & Engine leaving the old Station 31 at Dayton Street & Arapahoe Road. For anyone that knows the area it's difficult to picture this as Dayton Street looking north today. This was captured in the mid 1970's.
I'm guessing this is a 1985 photo of the current Station 31 with Rescue 31 (1976 Chevrolet Saulsbury) and Engine 31 (1978 Pierce)

Engine 33 at the Metro Fire Training Academy
Englewood Fire Air 1 also at the academy. The "South Metro" marking was from a mutual aid agreement at that time that shared specialty apparatus between the smaller departments. Bancroft, Castlewood, Cherry Hills, Englewood, Littleton & Parker all shared these resources. Cherry Hills / Castlewood housed the Heavy Rescue, Parker & Englewood housed two separate Haz-Mat units and Castlewood housed the Water Rescue. One of the Haz-Mat units is parked next to the air truck.
Engine 34's Pemfab / Boardman
This unit was housed at the Arapahoe County Airport (now Centennial Airport) and eventually became Castlewood Red Leader 35. It was a 1970 International with an ARFF skid unit that eventually was outfitted with a newer body and compartment space. This rig was hit by a taxing prop plane during an airshow and retired in 1999. This is the only photo I've ever seen with the rig in it's original configuration.
Station 36 in the late 1980's with Rescue, Engine & Tender 36.
Last one and the first time I've ever seen this unit... The Arapahoe County South Area Fire & Explosion Task Force. That taskforce still exists today but there isn't a specific response vehicle. I'm not sure where this unit was housed but the photo appears to have been taken in the parking lot of the Englewood Rec Center.

That's the apron at DFD St. 36...hint, hint. 8's was going to get the truck that went to 19's but the guys were able to talk fleet into assigning it somewhere else. The new rigs are governed to something crazy like 65 mph which really screws that 3rd due truck if their best access is interstates. Fleet also indicated I was a truck and not a tower. Tr's 27, 9, and 22 are all older than the trucks the job is now replacing, go figure?

Great stuff, Eric... Really interesting to see the old Castlewood photos. Yes, it is very difficult to picture that intersection looking so...rural. I just checked it out on Google streetview and it looks nothing like that photo. Thanks for posting them. John

I was thinking the same thing! Here's another good one for you to google streetview... The original Castlewood Station 34 at 8871 Maximus Drive, photo taken looking east / northeast. The station once stood where the east parking lot of South Metro 34 is located now. If you look at the birds eye view of the area there was nothing west of I-25 and C-470 didn't exist yet, the neighborhood to the west was being built at the time.

Yep, it's changed a lot. I lived in Hunters Hill in the mid-late 80's and it was still pretty desolate around 34's even then.

After sending the message to you I was able to find out that it was in fact a sheriffs bomb squad unit. Sounds like a deputy or bomb tech would get the unit when it was needed. Unknown why it was at the main firehouse instead of the old firehouse on Hamilton.

The Larkspur Fire District recently added Squirt 161 to their fleet, purchased the former City of Edgewater Engine 2. Edgewater FD was taken over by Wheat Ridge a few months ago and all the apparatus was sold.
Although the rig was re-painted Larkspur kept the Edgewater history alive...
Squirt 161 next to the firehouse. I started here and then the crew suggested a better location so we took a ride.
At the Perry Park Golf Course & Country Club
Engine 161 and Engine 162 came along for some group shots...
The area around Perry Park is surrounded by massive red rock outcroppings which made for a great backdrop.
