What are those blue sheets coming off the lead unit? Are they some type of escape device, such as a slide?
Yes, that are escape devices. There is an automatical system, which activate the devices like the slide system at an airplane accident.

Was out early on the morning of January 19 and took about 70 shots of NJT during the early morning rush hour. These are a few of my favorites.

The time is 0816 hrs. My buddy and I just arrived at our photo spot and the first train through is westbound Train X-133 led by P42 #4004. He'll pull into the yard just behind us and come back out about 40 minutes later or so as eastbound Train 1212.

At 0835 hrs. Train 1147 came westbound with nice clean P42 #4021 in the lead. Sharp looking locomotives but according to what I've heard around the engineers aren't particularly fond of the limited visibility out of the cab compared to the older F40's and GP's that NJT still has in service.

It's now 0918 hrs. and westbound Train 1205 has just discharged its passengers at the station platform and is now pulling into the yard to return in about 40 minutes or so as eastbound Train 1214. A very clean GP40PH-2B #4211 is in charge this morning.

At 0950 hrs. the daily local freight from NS, H-55, came east on its way from the yard at Suffern, NY to Paterson, NJ. The dispatcher had held H-55 at the west end of the interlocking for several NJT trains. They are now just underway, having gotten a clear board from the dispatcher. Engines are the NS #5617 and #5616.

This was the main reason we were out taking pictures on a cold, snowy morning. The NJT TGIV was out inspecting the line and since the TGIV doesn't run everyday you shoot it when you can. The TGIV came through at 0957 hrs. As soon was we got our shots of the TGIV we left for the day.

2 hours.....almost 70 shots taken....not a bad day. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/luxhello.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Luxhello' />

For the train buffs.....

Is there a train magazine called "The Shoreliner?" Someone gave me some photocopies of an article from this magazine I think that showed some WWII vintage Maxim fire trucks being loaded into some freight cars for shipment. I dont think the article was that old though, probably in last 10 years. Would love to get an original magazine for better photos. I can make out the issue number I think, but need to check when I get home from work. Is there a resource for back issues? Thanks in advance.

That's a 45-ton siderod industrial switcher made by Whitcomb. Here's a link to another example that doesn't look as good.
