We got one running up in Chattanooga. Come on up sometime to get your steam "fix". Drop a little extra and get a cab ride, THAT'S a true steam experience. Here's a link for our website to find out what's going on...

Now let's take in some Western steam. The Cumbres & Toltec RR is a superb operation. It's about as close as you can come to the last days of steam. Very little was changed when it became a tourist operation. Nice crews and a great, authenic collection and a great, gritty old style shop. Here is the C&T warming up for a work train detail.

What "pesky pop ups, banners and voice ads" at railpics? If that's the railpics Yahoogroup that I own I have yet to see one any of those things or at any Yahoogroup. Then again I do have my pop up blocker from turned on all the time.



Railpics Yahoogroup is very active, much like Firepics Yahoogroup used to be prior to this venue.

This last Thursday on spring break, myself and a member of the Illini Railroad Club did some railfanning in the Chicagoland Area (Blue Island, LaGrange, and Lemont). Here are some of the notable pictures from each location. Blue Island first...you have three lines coming together at this point...the Indiana Harbor Belt, CN\IC, and CSX (former B&O). Can't forget the Metra's Rock Island to Joliet passes overhead just to the south.

Saw six movements in about 20 minutes, all on the IHB, with 1 Metra.

Next up is the LaGrange Road stop on Metra's BNSF line to Aurora, otherwise known as "The Racetrack" for the expresses that race through. We saw plenty of action here, mostly Metra though, with some freights.

This Amtrak appeared to be the Southwest Chief, as the Zephyr is a longer train, not sure though

   



As we were leaving, this guy snuck up on us.

Finally, the slowest area, Lemont...only saw two. A freight that snuck up on us and one of six daily Metra's on the Heritage Corridor line to Joilet. They have 3 inbound to downtown Chicago in the AM and 3 outbound in the PM.



The "ghost train," this was the quietest freight I have ever seen/heard.

   



Off into the sunset. Tail 2 units were older GEs.

This is a little different, in 1913 the Sierra National Forest started running a Model T speeder. It was used to patrol the rails of the San Joaquin & Eastern Railway. The first one took a turn to fast ending up in the Kings River, luckily the only injuries were to the crews pride. It was replaced the following year and run for several more years.

I don't know what type train this is but its how people used to get from Merced to Yosemite. It has been parked in El Portal (the West entrance to Yosemite) since I was a kid, but was recently restored.

That would be a 3-truck Shay type logging locomotive. One of several types of logging steam locomotives used. The other two types were a Heisler and a Climax. All were steam driven gear type engines.
