6th-generation SFD engine: One of five identical units purchased between late 1989 and early 1991. KME FireFox 4x4/ 2000 gpm/ 500 tank / 50' LTI boom. These were the first 4-door cabs for SFD engines, and the last on a 4x4 chassis.
7th-generation SFD engine: One of four units purchased between May 1999 and February 2000. Saulsbury/Spartan 2000 gpm / 500 tank / 50' TeleSqurt. These engines were also equipped with Class A foam systems and folding handrails on the boom. The department had decided to make the change away from their Syracuse Safety Yellow color to this new dark red paint scheme.

South King Fire & Rescue, formerly Federal Way Fire Department, used a 1994 Pierce Lance with a 50ft Tele-Squrt as Engine 64 until it was replaced in 2011.

9th-generation SFD engine: A temporary budgetary crisis for the City of Syracuse resulted in my being told that I could have the two engines my Capital Improvements Plan called for - but without booms - or nothing at all. Well, that was a relatively easy choice - you get what you can get, while you can get it. So two Sutphen engines were acquired in 2011 - following the standard SFD pattern (2000 gpm/500 tank) but no booms. They were "fairly" well received, although our fireground commanders (including me) missed having the boom. The deck gun did provide a decent master stream - but that elevated stream is tough to replace. In actuality, the fact that we were willing to "play ball" with the city administration and not carp (too much) about it enabled them to find sufficient funding the next year for us to do a third Sutphen engine as an add-on. But don't worry - the booms will be back!
