Can someone explain the numbering system of Chicago apparatus?

Is there a significance to the pattern? Some are self explanatory such as Engine 78, Ladder 10, Ambulance 25, Squad 2, Battalion 18.

Why are some numbers hyphenated and others not? 5-2-1, 565, 644, 6-4-8.

A non-hyphenated number means it's a spare rig i.e D531.

It's amazing to see those 20 year old Spartan/E-ONE Squads still running. Even though they are spare rigs, I think there in service more then the newer HME/Central States rigs.

The squads still great appearance wise, no rust, dents or external damage.

IIRC The Hyphonated nubers go back to the days of the fire alarm telegraph system. 5-11.com I believe used to have a section of all of the vehicle hyphonated code numbers.
Reply
KFD, that is what I recall as well, from the days of the telegraph and Joker Stand, each unit had their own signature, such as 3-3-1 for Tower 21.

I can understand the tie to the telegraph system, but a lot of this apparatus is too new for the telegraph system. ie this type of apparatus didn't exist back then.

I agree and was about to say the same thing Fireman Joe. Ha ha.

As for 2-1-21 hmmm. I am guessing maybe the Deputy District Chief for the 1st?

Corrections welcome.

Thanks for that link. There is some logic to the numbering scheme.
