I show Engine Co. 10 to be assigned a '98 Pierce Lance with All-Steer.



The rig assigned as Squad Co. 02A was there 2nd piece at one point I believe. Unknown on the history of the companies 2nd piece rigs.

does anyone have a picture of the funny looking helmets and also can anyone elaborate on the squad companies second peices that look like refurbed engines and tell us what their all about.

At the time the Engines were modified into Squad's in the 93 and 94 they were meant to be used as Spare Squads,but in 1997 they became the "new"second Pieces for Squads 2 and 5 to help carry some of the equipment and to take some the weight off of the 1987/ Spartan E/One Squad (Snorkels) that those two company's were running with.Squad 1 at the time had just received an HME/Saulsbury Heavy Rescue style Squad and ran without a Snorkel until 2000 when all three of the Squads that are in the city proper received the current HME/Central States 2 piece Squads.

Before Squad 1 received the 1996 HME/Saulsbury they ran with a 1987 Spartan E/One Snorkel that was reassigned to Squad 5.

While this is may not be the exact reason the white over red Spartan Saulsbury wasn't the first White over Red Haz Mat Truck.The very first HazMat Truck on the CFD was an Old Mack/Platt Flying Squad Truck from the early 70's that was repainted White over Red in the mid 80's and that was our First Hazmat Unit.Apparently the CFD decided to go back to the Traditiona CFD Clors for the Haz Mat Trucks when the two new American La Frances were delivered.I personally think that they may have wanted to the HazMat Rigs to stand out as different so they could readily be identified.Thats speculation on my part however.

Firepost![/quote]The first Engine/Squad conversion was done in 1993 to a 1973 Seagrave Engine that was Originally assigned to Engine 11 and then to Engine 99 the 1,500 Gpm pump was removed and a Deck Gun was added as was the 500 gallon water tank.That rig was assigned as Squad 2's new second piece in 1997.

In 1994 a 1975 Seagrave Pumper was converted to a spare Squad (Engine 7's former rig) and became Squad 5's second piece in 1997.

In 1998 a 1979 Ford Seagrave Engine was converted into a Squad and replaced Squad 5's 1975 Seagrave which had detiorated.

In late 1998 Squad 1's Single Piece 1996 HME Saulsbury was involved in an accident and was sent back to HME in Michigan to have a New Cab installed so the CFD Converted a 1978 American La France former 2000 GPM Pumper into a Spare Squad for Squad 1.The 1996 HME Saulsbury was repaired and returned to Chicago in 1999 and went back to Squad One where it served until the Spring of 2000 when it was replaced with an HME /Central States Squad Van and later that summer a,55 foot Snorkel which they are currently using.Since then the 1996 HME/Saulsbury has been used as a Spare Haz Mat and currently a Spare squad rig. I don't really know if the Engine/Squad conversions are still around but I really doubt it.

For those keeping track various companies today have been going to their district houses to get fitted for bunker pants; So it seems that the old gear's days are now officially numbered.
