Train Photography
Matchots posts reminded me that I had these in my collection. Tucson has three rail cars at their training academy that were donated by various companies to be used as props. First up is the fire prop, ex-Southern Pacific tank car.

Second up is an ex-Union Pacific box car. I think they were using this as a prop and as storage space.

I have a few shots of the last one, looks to be a pressure car once owned by the ADM Corporation.

Fairfax County used to have rail cars for training purposes at thier academy, they've since been removed. They had some old Amtrak coaches, B&O box cars, and one tank car.

Here is a shot found on railpictures.net of a catenary vehicle in use in Romania. At least you get the idea of how the vehicle is used even though its not the same as post #470.



Although I haven't seen it recently, here in Phoenix the Metro Light Rail catenary vehicle is a 3 axle flat bed semi style truck.



Permission for use of this photo here was not obtained, but credit is given to the photographer Serban Stanescu and used for reference purposes only to show how a catenary vehicle is used.

Same things on both really, only major thing different seems to be that the Amtrak one has two cabs.

Here is what is slowly replacing the FL9s seen above, the BL20-GH built by Brookville Equipment Corporation. Here is the #114 passing through Pawling, New York.

It's been a great week for my photography hobby. After shooting 35mm for years I made the move to digital a few years ago. I was frustrated by the compromises most digital cameras had compared to my 35mm SLR. I was also frustrated by the cost of digital SLR's. Well that changed last weekend when I purchased a new Nikon D-40 kit along with a Nikon 55-200mm zoom lens. I've fallen in love with photography again. I've been trackside almost every day since I bought the camera. Can't wait for the fire apparatus parade/wetdown season to start. I spent today at Iona Island, NY and caught 3 southbounds within about an hour or so. 1st up is the CSX #7811 leading general merchandise train K-439 southbound past the newly installed automatic signal at MP40. There are piles of new ties waiting to be installed. In fact the 3 southbounds today were backed up due to a northbound work train dropping off ties north of Iona Island.

A few minutes after the 1st train passed the tank train came crawling around the corner. This is an ethanol train, though I missed the train symbol. It's being led by the CSX #7908.

Here's the tank train just a little closer now. The #7908 is leading a GE standard cab unit, somewhat of a rarity these days. It seems those wide-cabs are everywhere.

This seems to be one of my new favorite shots since the new automatic signal was installed last year. Here's the tank train approaching the signal at MP 40.

Last train (for me, anyway-I had to get home to sleep for a midnight shift) was this stack train led by the CSX #576. Again I apologize for not having the train symbol. Just like the tank train before he came crawling around the curve and up the grade onto the island. I just wished I had had been recording as well....those locomotives sounded awesome!
