Forgive me for asking (I don't frequently follow this thread, although DCFD has a very interesting history), but didn't

somebody say several months ago that the Pierce/LTI was in permanent storage because it didn't pass

the ladder test?

Either they were mistaken or the truck studied extra hard…

Whatever the story, S-371 (1981 Hahn/ LTI / 2000 Pierce) was seen a few months ago on the streets downtown. View is looking east in the 2500 block Pennsylvania Ave NW



There seems to be a few personnel in permanent storage at the Training Academy who can’t seem to pass a test, but that’s another thread.

Pierce rebuilt shop serial S-371 (Pierce #11744TR) for $370,000 in 2000. That was $103,000 more than it cost new in 1981. However, it is titled as a 2000 truck. Image is in quarters in service with Truck Co. 3, March 2009.

No. 3 Platoon drills on the new Truck 9 in front of quarters, 1981. The Hahn tiller could turn slightly better than a standard Mack CF pumper. It was the first aerial ladder truck in DC with outriggers instead of stabilizing jacks. The truck had no axle locks, so the rear tractor wheels had to be lifted off of the pavement to prevent unwanted movement of the turntable.

S-371 spent most of its life as Truck 9, but, since 2000, has seen service with Truck 10, Truck 7, and Truck 15. She went into reserve in 2006 and currently resides in the garage on Gallatin St. NW behind Engine 24’s house available for ready use. 2009 photo

Definitely a challenge in that tiller seat (right, Floyd???) I tillered that one day from U Street to Georgetown on a particularly busy afternoon. All you say looking out that window was that big LTI ladder.



A dramatic difference in view from the ALF TDA's and that Sutphen/Pirsch that was at Ladder 11 for years. LOLOL

Thanks for the clarification. I'm glad it's still running. Truly a unique rig. I went back through this thread (Post #949, August, 2007) and found the reference I was thinking of:

In reading it, it showed as the aerial just failed inspection, and not testing (if I'm making the correct distinction).

First of all, I would just like to say nice job and thanks to all who have posted photos on this thread! It's truely great documentation of the history of the DCFD and very interesting to follow.



I do have a question for you guys though. I am going to be in the DC area this weekend and hope to squeeze in a little shooting. I was just wondering if you guys could provide locations for the 500 #ed apparatus that I believe are run as hose wagons. I'd like to try and shoot some of the more unique/older pieces and if I recall correctly, these are some of the last E-Ones in the department.

Any help you could provide would be appreciated.

Hi Patrick,



I really do appreciate the offer; however, I will not be arriving until later Saturday evening and then departing Monday morning. I would take ya up on it, but it's going to be more of a non-buffing related trip, with hopefully some stops in the morning..........and that's weather permitting. Unfortunately, I don't really know how much time I'm going to have yet. Thanks again for the offer though.

The six 50-Series water supply wagons are assigned one to a battalion and are numbered for the battalion to which they are assigned; Battalion 1 has 51, Battalion 2 has 52, etc. They carry large diameter hose and commonly run as a Water Supply Task Force – three water supply engine companies and a Battalion Chief.

As far as I know the oldest pumper running the streets (July, 2009) is reserve piece S-105, one of two 1998 Seagrave wagons delivered in 1998. These two wagons were equipped with extrication equipment (no longer). Recently disposed E-60 (S-104) went to Engine Co. 31 when new and S-105 was assigned to E-27.

Reserve Engine E-70, S-106, is the remaining ’98 Seagrave. It is normally quartered in the warehouse on Gallatin St. east of Georgia Ave NW, behind Engine 24’s quarters.

The oldest E\-One in service (July 2009) is a 1998 Cyclone II reserve pumper numbered as Engine 77, also at the warehouse.
