Chicago Fire Department
If I remember correctly, Chicago had that issue before w/ the 1985 tower ladders from E\-One. All were spec'd to fit into specific houses and some didn't fit (as they were all built the same way).

That's a nice shot Seth. Where did you take it at? How many other Ambulance for Chicago did you see and what units were they numbered for? By the way in Chicago we don't don't call our Ambulances "Medics" we just call them Ambulances, both ALS and BLS. The BLS Ambulances are number in the 80's and the 90's series and our ALS Ambulances are number 1 through 60. Altogether we run with 60 ALS and 15 BLS Ambulances.

Are all 75 running 24 hrs? What is the busiest Ambulance and what are their run totals?

Here in STL, we run with 13 total medic units. 2 of them are only open 12hrs. Between us all we ran over 75,000 calls last year. And my medic unit (10) has been the busiest over the last few years with over 7,000 runs; running 20-30 calls in 24hrs.

We also just took delivery of 9 of 11 new medic units.

STLFire all of our Ambulances are 24 hour units and we have 4 EMS Platoons so they work one 24 hours and get 72 hours off as opposed to the men on our fire suppression units who get 48 hours off.Our busiest Ambulance is Ambulance 10 which went out on 7,957 runs last year 2008.

The new medics look great. What kind of lightbar do they have on them?

Ambulances in any metro run a TON of calls. My last ride with STLFD EMS we ran 21 in 12 hrs.

How do the medics like the 24 shifts? I couldnt see running 30+ calls a day, sounds tough

Looks to be a Federal Signal Legend (it'd fit with the all Federal Signal package, too).

Thanks. I caught it at the ambulance shops, I forget where (my first trip to Chicago and poorly planned on my part). They had JUST been delivered the previous Friday.

Thanks also for the ambulances. Are the ambulances civilian staffed, or staffed by firefighters?

That's not a newer ambulance, that's one of the first generation rigs when they went back to the F series cabs.

Im so glad they got the American flag on the Right/Rear right. Nothing is more aggrevating than seeing it backwards, and people assuming they have it forwards. Rig looks great by the way...
Totally not picking a fight here, but I've always wondered about the flags on vehicles.

I understand if a fire engine had a real flag waiving off the back, the stars would always be to the front of the vehicle. I get that…

But how come if you're getting a sticker, you would get it backwards and stick it on. If it's just a picture of the flag, should the stars always be in the upper left hand side (if mount horizontally) or upper right (if mounted vertically).

Thanks!

I have heard it both ways, so I supose it's all in how you interpret the flag code. I always heard, and read, that the field of stars never retreats, that is why the flag on the right is "backwards" to some with the field of stars in the upper right and not the upper left. I was told by a friend in the military that this only applies to military units in a time of war, but I have never read anything backing this up. You will see some subway cars with the flag on it as well, but because those run in both directions the field of stars is always in the upper left. Here is a website titled Flag Rules and Regulations that may clear some things up, but doesn't state how a decal should be displayed on a vehicle or for that matter how a patch should be work on the right shoulder.

Just found this site that talks about uniform patches and decals and paintings on vehicles.

I've got another question.

Braun is known for building their roofs with an arch. Any reason Chicago doesn't want this spec? (You'd think with all the snow, it would be a benefit)

Braun uses their "cheaper" extruded body for some "big" bid orders. They will only build this style for an order of 5 or more. They usally try to "flip" people to the normal "solid body" style. Some do some do not.
