I do this routinely. Simply don your turnouts, sit in the seat, put your airpack straps across your shoulders, then put your seatbelt on. You can still be ready to go on arrival without sacrificing safety.
As for catching a fire while your enroute back from another call, then those are the times where you should don your gear on arrival, as ever unpopular as that option might be!
