McLean VFD's 1997 Pierce Lance (lot's of memories on this rig) was rode hard for many years (lots of trips out to the Beltway, GW Parkway) before it went to the Academy as the "B" engine. McLean VFD had just purchased the big tandem axle heavy rescue and did not have funds to procure a new engine so a deal was struck with FRD for the swap. I imagine she is going to be retired soon since there are three wagons coming in from Pierce later this year. I'm sure the Academy will be back to getting another hand-me down based on the current doom-and-gloom budget projections.
Both of 10's rigs, the County-owned ladder and the Volunteer owned wagon have returned from inspection and service from Pierce.
As for removing Roto-Rays from older rigs and putting them on the new ones, it won't happen; there are factions within the Apparatus Committee that abhor, hate, disdain (pick one) the Roto-Ray.
We (the fire service) are quickly approaching a point where tradition (fun ones like Roto-Rays, red rigs; not the risky ones) means very little to those making the decisions which makes me glad I have less than two years until I'm completely retired.
