In March 2008 the DCFD organized six 3-man companies whose primary mission is fire hydrant inspection. Washington Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) provided the apparatus, six Chevrolet K3500 trucks, and reimburses the city for half the cost of staffing. Firefighters assigned to CSU test, log and collect hydrant information, as well as identifying defects and GPS information that is transmitted back to WASA as well as the fire department.
