Maybe four feet from where I'd parked my car. It was a great spot...the grass is well-maintained and there's no "weedy, buggy ditch" for the mosquitoes to come out of and feast on me. A great place to keep a safe distance and still capture some nice shots of the trains.
If you meant where as in "city/state" the station in the one shot is Prairie View, IL (which has been mostly swallowed up by Buffalo Grove and Lincolnshire).
The signals only come on when a train is approaching so there is good advanced-warning when a train is approaching but I didn't want to venture out for a closer look in the dark like that; who knows what phantom gopher hole I'd find...the hard way.
