One of the reserve pumps, this 1997 Freightliner/Superior 1050/1000 originally served the Ottawa Fire Department prior to amalgamation.  This was a demo bought as an emergency purchase.

This 2002 HME/Fort Garry 1250/500 was the first fire truck purchased by the newly amalgamated Ottawa Fire Services.  It was originally in service as Pump 13B, then the busiest truck in the city.  This truck is now a reserve. This was the first of 2 groups purchased that year for a total of 14 pumpers.

Some additional background on Ottawa Fire Services.

Prior to January 1, 2001, there were 9 fire departments within the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton (county government).  They were:

Ottawa (14 career stations) +/- 600 career members

Gloucester (4 career stations) 130 career members

Nepean (4 career stations) 120 career members

Kanata (3 composite stations) +/- 30 career and 40 volunteers

Cumberland (1 composite and 3 volunteer stations) +/- 30 career, 80 volunteer

Osgoode Township (3 volunteer stations) 60 volunteers

Rideau Township (2 volunteer stations) +/- 50 volunteers

Goulbourn Township (2 volunteer stations) +/- 50 volunteers

West Carleton Township (6 volunteer stations) +/- 100 volunteers

In addition, the city of Vanier and the Village of Rockcliffe both purchased fire protection from Ottawa.

On January 1, 2001,  the Regional Municipality of Ottawa Carleton ceased to exist, and all 11 municipalities were amalgamated into the new City of Ottawa.  The fire departments remained somewhat autonomous until 2003, when the first inter-departmental transfers occurred. Automatic backup did occur, but the crews remained within their old "silos" until the transfers occurred, in order to give administration time to organize policies and procedures.

Additional stations have been built since the amalgamation to service rapidly growing areas.

Districts are organized as follows, and unless noted, are manned by career members:

District 1 - Centretown (stations 11, 12, 13)

District 2 - West End (stations 21, 22, 23, 24, 25)

District 3 - South End (stations 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37)

District 4 - Far West (stations 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47) 41, 45, 46 are composite

District 5 - East End (stations 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57) 53 is composite

District 6 - Rural Northwest (stations 61, 62, 63, 64, 66) volunteer

District 7 - Rural East (stations 71, 72, 73) volunteer

District 8 - Rural Southwest (stations 81, 82, 83, 84) volunteer

District 9 - Rural South (stations 91, 92, 93, 94) volunteer

Reserve Ladder 36 is a 2002 E\-One 1750/300/100 foot that originally served station 13 as Ladder 13, the busiest ladder in the city.  I drove this truck on a LOT of alarms and to a lot of fires over the 5 years I was assigned here, hence, my Firepics name!!
