Rescue Engine 141 - Pierce, I believe 750 water, 1250 gpm, but not 100% sure

Thats all I can find for now. Would like to have someone that can take more proffesional pics in the area. There are a lot of interesting rigs around.

A "rule of thumb" on Pierce bodies......There were basically three body lengths used, this being the shortest. Look at the compartment forward of the rear axle. If it is taller than it is wide, its the short body, if it's wider than tall, its the medium body. The long body had two compartment doors forward of the rear axle. Pierce rarely built odd-sized tanks, most are 500, 750, 1000, 1250, or 1500. Short bodies have 500 or 750 tanks. A look at the hosebed will determine which. If there is a taller tank and shallow hosebed, it's a 750. If it's a larger hosebed and a shorter tank, it's 500. With experience, this will become easier to judge. Same for the medium body, either 1000 or 1250 tanks, unless it has some unusual feature such as ladder storage under the hosebed. Sometimes a quick look under the rear wheelwell will reveal if the tank fills the entire space under the body. A medium body with rescue compartments may have a smaller tank than expected. The 1500 gallon tank will have the body with two doors ahead of the rear axle. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, but this should help you guess.

My wife and I will be spending the first weekend of November at the Bavarian Inn in Shepardstown, WVA, just outside Harpers Ferry I believe. As I am not at all familiar with this area, I'm hoping some FirePixers can point me in the direction of some apparatus I might be able to shoot assuming I can get an hour or two... :-) Thanks.

I am beginning to gather that there are lots of interesting fire trucks in garages in West Virginia. Wish I had some time to spend visiting this area more.

I couldn't remember if this was the engine that was rehabed or the other. The unit actually rolled over an embankment on a structure fire. I think they just got too close to the side of the road and slid over.

Nice pic. The engine was placed out of service a few years ago. We tried to sell it, with no luck. It was eventually donated to the Mineral County Vocational Center for the fire science program.

I always thought these Macks were "B" models - but, as I look at this shot - I think they might have been "L" models. Any thoughts???

Shoe, They are "L" Series. Hard to tell what year they are. The "B" Series began in 1953 and ran through 1966.

I am enjoying learning these things. I thought that they were a 1950 and 1953. But it could possibly be a 1952. The former Fire Chief, Cliff Sligar said that he'd take either one of these and out-pump a newer rig any time. I have no doubt...

This was the old 38-12. It was placed out of service back in 2001, when we placed the new 38-12 (aka Engine/Tanker 38) in service. I'm not sure where it is at this moment, but it was for sale for a while without success. Next we placed the apparatus up for sealed bids. Allegany Quarries won the bid (can't remember the price, but was very very low). The rock quarry used the rig to wet down their roads, and preped areas for blasting. The quarry closed a few years ago though, thats why I'm not sure where it is. I'll do some checking to see if I can find out something.



We came to find out later that Pete Centifoni (who originally speced and sold the truck to us), if awarded the bid was going to restore the rig back to the original condition. Although Pete passed shortly after, I really would've loved to see it restored.
A personal favorite was this 1958 Ford F-800/ALF 750/1000, served until mid-90's and reportedly went to Koppers Tie plant in Green Spring,WV.?
