And on a previous trip, stopped past Engine 106, H&L 13, Ambulance 48's house... in the back were the Mobile Ventilation Unit, and the Support Service Unit. Also included Ambulance 48 leaving for a call, and Engine 58 sitting beside Navy Pier.

I was perusing my archives ( a dangerous thing to do) and I found this old CFD photo unit shot of a 4-11 alarm at 2700 Wabash on October 24 1965. This is just a wonderful shot in so many ways!! The FWD truck, on the move with the tillerman in place...the hi ranger snorkel setting up, SS1 snorkel backing into position as well as a look at the back end of SS1A...not to mention the spectacular fire condition!!

I wonder who took this photo? How about a report from someone who was there??

from Russ Coughlin: Steve, I think this is a 5-11 + 1 Special at 3616 – 20 S. Iron on 4/4/64. The Special was for 5 Engines + Snorkel 5.

Here's a real dandy...March 21, 1957 5-11 alarm 121 N Lasalle st city hall..I worked with a few men who were on duty this day..they said Fr Gorman came and sat in the office with them to encourage them to work in the smoky conditions...I believe this may have been a newspaper photo.

I wish I knew where this fire was...Some interesting points...H&L 2 with their Magirus and the back end of 673 big mo a real Chicago classic...anyone have info on this fire??

From Russ Coughlin: Steve, This was a 5-11 + 1 Special @ 952 N. Michigan on 2/5/71. The Special was for 5 Engines and 2 Trucks. I also think that all 6 Salvage Squads were special called as well. The building was of mixed occupancies including some high end shops and art galleries. The key to this fire was that a strong cold front went through the city during this fire which brought 40mph winds and dropping temperatures which really hampered the CFD’s battle.

Steve, fantastic picture. It is one of the few pictures that I have come across with one of the big deluge guns in operation. I am always amazed with you collection. Toad

Steve that shot with Big Mo Working and Truck 2's Mack Magirus's 144 foot Aerial Ladder up was taken at an extra alarm on the south west corner of Michigan and Oak street and I believe that it was during the winter of 71/72. It was a very icy fire and there was alot of icing on the Oak street side of the building. While the fire occured during the day I was there around night fall and they were still pumping water on the building. I remember talking to the Engineer of Engine 117 who was working on the scene in the evening and I do remember that Engine 117 was using a 1953 FWD at the time. I believe that it was a 5-11 alarm.

Nice job with those black and white photos and I know that a few of them were in the CFD's 1969 annual report which was the last glossy annual report that the CFD had done for many many years.

Those are great shots, please post more if you have them. I just got your new book 2 weeks ago and its outstanding. Any chance of doing a book to cover the 70's and 80's?

Anyone know why 2-7-1 was switched from a bigger truck to a smaller truck, and in such a short period of time?
