Whats the story behind Engine 24, was it made for a unique area ? [/quote] HME/Central States. I've also heard guys call them Yugos I believe there were four of these (8, 20, 24, 25) 24 and 25 are still in service, 20's is now at training and 8's was wrecked. Don't think they were/are well liked by the companies and it remains to be seen if the remaining two get replaced in the next round of purchases. They have very high hosebeds, all the valves are electric with the panel being in the rear officers side compartment, and all the weight is in the rear making the rigs kindof tail heavy. I believe the intention was to place these rigs in areas that were congested but that didn't quite pan out as it was intended. On the flip side, they turn on a dime and are pretty quick!
For what it's worth... A few folks at DFD have said that during the spec process a high ranking chief said he didn't want the new engines to look traditional. Which explains the uncommon pump configuration. The on going joke at Engine 20 was "Junker 20" instead of "Pumper 20" with stories of nuts & bolts falling of the rig on a regular basis.
Thanks for the info, so the bright idea didn't work, looks a bit cheap and nasty....but at least its something different to the usual Pierce
When those trucks were designed the dealer informed the department of concerns about the short wheelbase and the overall configuration and how they would hold up. The FD proceeded as designed and some of those poor results are because of that. If the crew doesn't like the rear pump panel or the front booster reel, it was the FD specifications that decided those locations, not the builder. The loose bolts on the other hand, well, Locite is wonderful.
Spec can mean everything, if you can't write a spec, don't blame the builder.
