Steve, the high pressure pumps are 3 stage pumps and each stage reduces the capacity by half. So since they're 2,000 GPM pumps in stage 1 when they go to stage 2 they max at 1,000 GPM and then the 3rd stage is maxed at 500 GPM. I don't know what the specific height they're looking for but these are supposed to be a back up if the pump in the stand pipe on a hi-rise fail. Hi risies are supposed to have jockey pumps every 10 floors and 500 GPM gives the equaliviant to 2 1/2 lines with 1 1/8 tips. The gauge on the left below the preconnect I think is the high pressure compound gauge.

For the high pressure pumpers, are the discharges for the high pressure pumping on the officer's side or on the rear?

The silver wheel valve between the two 2 1/2" discharges looks like what you adjust from pumping in either volume or pressure. not sure how CFD pumpers are set up. If its in pressure mode, do all discharges pump at pressure instead of volume?

Steve , according to my information we currently are using , 4 triple stage high pressure pumpers and they are at Engine's 42,98,5 and 60. I don't believe that Engine 13 is using one, but since we have one on the south side, now I would like to see at least one be put in service on the north side on one of the lake front companies so as to cover the high rises on north Lake Shore drive and on Sheridan road.

Yes, being in pressure mode changes the way the impellers move water.

I was thinking the same on gauge. Looks like all gauges on left go up to 1000 PSI. I'd say those two chrome hand wheels also on left control the second and third stage.



But it's been a longgggggg time since, I ran anything but single stage.

After comparing the high pressure pump panel to a standard CFD pump panel, I conclude the following:



The chrome handwheel above the main intake is the changeover valve, from pressure to volume. As already stated, the three gauges to the far left, rated for 1000 PSI, are for the third stage. The top one is overall 3rd stage pressure, like a master gauge. The other two 1000 PSI gauges and the two chrome handwheels on the left are for each of the two high pressure discharges, likely located on the curb side pump panel. High pressure is only available from these two discharges, answering the question in Post #1631. Total rated pump capacity is 1500 GPM, with 450 GPM available @ 600 PSI. I haven't been able to locate the switch to engage the third stage, but I would guess that it is electrical, not manual. A typical 3-stage pump is not simply a pump with three impellers, it's more of a two stage pump with a single stage pump attached to it.



BTW, impellers always move water the same way. The changeover valve opens and closes valves that route the water differently. In Volume (Parrallel), water is directed to both impellers simultaneously, the impellers speed it up and send it to the discharges. In this case, it would be 1500 GPM at 150 PSI. In Pressure (Series), the water is routed to one impeller, it is sped up, then routed to the other impeller, where the speed is doubled, and then discharged. In this case, 750 GPM at 250 PSI. When the third stage is used, the water is routed from the second impeller to the third, where it is sped up once more. Due to the plumbing and size of the third stage impeller, the flow is reduced but the pressure is increased, in this case to 450 GPM at 600 PSI.

Dave, good explanation. I was a little too short with my post, what I meant was the different mode changes the way the impellers move water in that they operate in series rather than simulateously, thus it would be impossible to have some discharges put out volume not pressure.
