DCFD Photos, old or new
   

Now you have me reminiscing. The last unit with a rubber boat on top (prior to the three TAC Units in 2000) was the original HazMat, organized as a combination unit with Rescue Squad 3 in 1984. Photo is shop serial S-604, a 1966 Ford N850/Bruco , xRS-2, xRS-4, xReserve. It stayed around until 1988.

That is a pretty neat looking ride. It probably saw a great deal of work during it's DCFD career. Thanks for sharing these great pictures with us, chief!

The eight rearmounts and the two LTI tillers (S-374 through S-383) bought in the decade 1983 to1993 had a cabinet arrangement that dictated that all ladders come from the rear trays. These photographs shows one problem in the tight streets of DC when a driver gets too close to the rear ladder trays of a parked truck and renders the ground ladders useless. It does not happen often. When it does occur, it is, uh, memorable. The DCFD reverted to the former arrangement in 1994.

In 1994, the department took delivery on its first Seagrave tractor drawn aerial since 1966 and returned to ladders on the sides of the trailer as well as in the trays. Shop serial S-384 (Seagrave #76295) went in service with Truck Co. 16 in October of that year. Wrecked in 1996, it was rebuilt and is in service today as a reserve. Two more Seagrave ladders came in March 1996. Shop serial S-385 (’95 Seagrave #76306) went to Truck Co. 9.

Another pair of Seagrave trucks that came in 1997 went to Trucks 17 and 6, and were the last to be painted in the stars and bars livery. Truck Co. 17 received shop serial S-387 (Seagrave #76313). March 2001 photo, 53rd and Drake Pl. SE.

Last pic for today

Truck 6, S-388 (Seagrave #76314), was delivered white in 1997. It was repainted, but in this July 2001 photo still maintains the original white wheels.

Chief, you forgot to mention the snappy paint job they did on this beast. The white stripe on T17 was not removed for painting and replaced later, it was in fact masked off and they painted around it! Question about DC Hoseloads and hydraulics. Where I work, for the long stretches, we use 2 1/2" and attach 1 3/4 as needed. It sounds like you DC folks have a system down with this long line.



Question is: Why not use a 2 1/2 leader on it to reduce friction loss? Is it because 2 1/2 can be a pain to move?



I hope this comes across right, I am just trying to understand/learn.

Our 21/2's are made up as attack lines. Some companies have made up a leader line for their respective Local Alarm Districts. As for the long lines yes We got it down . Ya know If it ain't broke don't fix it. Thats why we still use 11/2 and 3" supply lines. You came accross right . It's just a DC Thing.
