MFD replaced a fleet of old engines with this fleet of Mack CFs, starting with this 1970 1000/500.

When Martinsburg started replacing with new Pierces in 1997, the 70 Mack found a new home in Berkeley Springs,WV.

E-3 had this 1974 1000/500 model until 2001, when it was sold to the Orleans,MD. VFC in Allegany County. It had been rebodied by Pierce in 1993.

E-5 also had a 1975 1000/500 model, also rebodied by Pierce in 1993-94. I am uncertain that this remains on the MFD roster, since Martinsburg now has 3 Pierce engines and a Pierce heavy rescue.

I stopped by there in 2005 and there was an older Mack in the bay, just can't remember which one or if it is still there.

I LOVE the shot of E-9 in it's red color scheme. I have some distant shots of her in white and orange. I'll try to get them posted. She ran for many years as E-9 in Warwood and then went into reserve.



McMechen is just south of Wheeling on the river and is in Marshall County. They have adopted the orange and white color scheme as well, but I can't remember for sure if the Sutphen had ever been painted. I think it was.



Rear windshields were very common at the time in that area. On cold nights, you could pull the hose bed cover up over the windshield and get in out of the wind and rain. We used to put our gear on while riding on the back step while someone held you on... I won't even begin to tell you about the shenanigans that went on up on the back step on the way to and from parades!!!



Bethlehem is on the hill just to the East of Wheeling. They are a small volunteer department in Ohio County and are dispatched by Wheeling.

Buffalo only had 2 1977 Pioneers. The pumper assigned to E 23 did not have a telesqurt, and a rearmount 100' ladder was assigned to L 9. The only Pioneers with a telesqurt (35') were assigned to E 18 and E 37. They were from the first order of 9 pumps and 4 ladders. Shortly after delivery of the Pioneers, E 36's Mack CF and E-1's Pioneer were switched. The original order of Pioneers went to Engines 1, 18, 22, 25, 26, 31, 35, 37, and 38. The 4 ladders were assigned to Ladders 4, 7, 10, and 12.

I seriously doubt that this rig served Buffalo. All photos of Buffalo Pioneer pumpers that I have ever seen have the older style pump panel, this one has the fancier stainless one, like the Century's had. Also, most of the Buffalo Pioneers ended up with R.D. Murray front fenders, which this rig doesn't have.

It was repainted white/orange. If the old Sutphen thread is still alive, I posted a shot of it there.

WV, especially the southwestern and southeastern portions of the state, are chock full of gems. It's an area that is very virgin and rarely photographed. I might hit the Nitro/St. Albans area later this year.

Mike, I think this was their first engine. One of the guys that works with me runs there and I remember him talking about it...makes sense, it is a 56 and they were established in 56. From what I have heard they are trying to restore it.

Nitro city is having serious financial trouble. Something to the tune of a million plus dollars in debt. The talk was to put the fire depts trucks up for collateral in attempt to pay down its bills.



For the record my vfd bought the mini pumper that Buckhannon replaced with R 11, which is an Allegheny, one of the last trucks they built before going under.



The mini is a ALF chevy chassis

Here is Morgantown's Engine 8, a 1956 Mack B 750gpm as photographed in 1969.





McLean, Virginia in Fairfax County ran this tough looking 1979 GMC Brigadier/Saulsbury as their Squad 1. It also had a 250/200.



From McLean it was sold to The Plains, Virginia in Fauquier County. I was told by someone from The Plains that they sold it to some company that did work with railroads. The GMC squad was extensively modified and had the capability to drive on the rails. Sure would have loved to have seen that truck.
