Train Photography
looks like a setout track, siding or spur with jointed rail. Jointed rail in this type of application would be typical even today.

Maybe four feet from where I'd parked my car. It was a great spot...the grass is well-maintained and there's no "weedy, buggy ditch" for the mosquitoes to come out of and feast on me. A great place to keep a safe distance and still capture some nice shots of the trains.



If you meant where as in "city/state" the station in the one shot is Prairie View, IL (which has been mostly swallowed up by Buffalo Grove and Lincolnshire).



The signals only come on when a train is approaching so there is good advanced-warning when a train is approaching but I didn't want to venture out for a closer look in the dark like that; who knows what phantom gopher hole I'd find...the hard way.

Oh ok, thanks, me and my friends have yet to venture that far north on a railfanning trip. Here is one of my most recent shots from Lemont, IL on the BNSF Transcon route and then from the Congress Park stop on Metra's BNSF line, just east of LaGrange, IL. I think they are my best two train shots.

Tripod and long exposure time (lots of playing with the exposures and f-stops). And timing for hitting the shutter

Well the first railfan trip of 2009 is complete. Spent the day railfanning the Hudson Valley of NY between Bear Mountain and Newburgh, NY. The west shore of the Hudson River features the River Line of CSX. It is one of the main freight arteries into and out of the NYC metro area. The east shore features the double-track mainline of Metro-North, a major commuter line between NYC and Poughkeepsie, NY. CSX and Amtrak also operate on this line.



This first shot of the day is of a northbound commuter run at Manitou, NY. MNRR #211 is a GE P32AC-DM. These are unique units in several ways. They utilize AC traction motors vs. the more usual DC traction motors found on most diesels. They also have 3rd-rail pick-up shoes to allow them to run with the diesel prime mover shut down. They operate this way south of Croton-On-Hudson, NY all the way into Manhattan.



Due to trackwork all northbound trains were being held at Manitou for the southbounds to pass. Once each southbound was past the northbounds would cross over and head north. This was the first train we shot at 11:15am.

And here is the cab car, MN #6205, bringing up the markers. MNRR trains, as do most commuter trains, operate in what is known as push-pull mode. The cab car has a full set of engineer controls so that turning of the train, or swapping the locomotive to the other end of the train, is not necessary. Since most commuter trains do go back and forth on the same routes it is a very expedient method of train operation.

On the scanner we heard a southbound CSX freight coming so we drove to the west shore and set up at Iona Island, NY and caught the K-688 southbound with CSX #7927, a GE C40-8W, leading around 12:30pm.

We crossed back to the east side of the Hudson to catch some more Metro-North action. While we were waiting we caught this general freight heading south on the River Line just after 1pm.

It's 1:10pm now and the MNRR #211/Cab Car #6205 combo that we shot going northbound just after 11am is now heading back southbound. Here's the #6205 leading 6 other coaches along with the trailing P32AC-DM #211.

And here is MNRR #211 showing the markers as it heads south through Manitou, NY and the interlocking. Sorry about the sun glare, but I think it still came out pretty good for shooting into the sun.
