Thank you bigbadred411 and recoveringspark.

In 1968 Ward LaFrance delivered five 750-gpm pumpers on Ford chassis (S-101 thru 105). They measured 22’6” long and weighed 10 ¼ tons.

Here’s Engine 10’s WLF pulling up in front of quarters, 1342 Florida Ave NE. The firehouse opened in 1925 as the quarters of Truck Co. 13 (one of eight truck houses) and the reserve horse-drawn Water Tower, which had been converted to a towed apparatus. Engine Co. 10 moved here in 1940 from their 1895 house at 1341 Maryland Ave. NE (still there). September, 1987 photo.

This Hahn publicity photo showing the first delivery of 10 Hahn Engines in 1980.

The 1980 Engines have a different pump panel than the others, 4 in 1981, 5 in 1982 and three in 1983.

A TDA was delivered for each year, 1981,1982 and 1983.

Total of 25 trucks in 4 years.

The only other large order for Hahn was Boston MA 19 trucks in 1970-71 and another three in 1978.

Is it me, or is the engine number 5 or 6?



Notes say Eng-6, a 1983 Cab

All the 1983 Hahns delivered to DC are the 84-92 cabs

I've missed this thread for a month, but once again want to thank you all for posting a complete history of the DCFD apparatus.



The CSU units seem like a great idea and it is forward thinking like this by the Department and the City to get a helpful entity in service. All big cities could use something like this, and it is great for more man power.

Thanks for pointing that out, Frank. I never noticed the distinction of the intake ball valves being situated sideways, so to speak. Here’s Engine 9, a 1980 Hahn, working 732 Lamont St. NW, April, 1982. Interestingly, this formerly four-storied apartment house remains occupied today as a two-story apartment.

Engine 32’s 1981 (1982?) Hahn on the southwest corner of Martin Luther King and Good Hope Rd. SE. The post-1980 Hahns went with the Detroit 6V92TA.

Correction to the caption for Engine 30’s 1980 Hahn: it was powered by a Detroit 6V71, as was Engine 4’s 1980 Hahn, seen here at a pump job at 14th and Harvard St. NW shortly after delivery.

I am not that familiar with DCFD, but notice the engines are usually referred to as wagon in the descriptions but none are lettered that way. My point of reference is some VA localities that have pumpers lettered and identified on the radio as Engine or Wagon such and such. Which designator is used over the radio in DC? I for one, am sorry that NOVA has done away with the Wagon terminology having gone to Engine 506, Engine 506B, etc instead.

DC had the Wagon and Pumper combination until 1991. After that, all I ever heard (and used when I was an ECC) was Engine ___ to Headquarters.



Headquarters was changed to Communications a few years later.



Even after leaving DC for FDNY in 98, and listening to DCFD over the internet, I never heard anything but Engine.

Some of the older members of the dept still call them wagons. But over the radio they are called Engine??
