The last train of the morning was the northbound CSX Q-410. After that I headed home for a nap......I have to work the 4pm-12am shift tonight and don't think it would be a good thing to fall asleep at the dispatch console.

Part of the Q-410's consist was this uniquely painted EMD SD-40. It has obvious UP heritage with the base yellow paint and the color and style of numbers under the cab window but I'm not familiar with the company it's lettered for. The only other markings I could find on the unit were the 'FI' on the side.

All in all it was a good morning....... <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />

July 1, 2009. Not the best day in terms of the weather, but at least there wasn't any rain.

Around 11:20am this hi-rail truck came south on the CSX River Line. At the grade crossing at MP 41 they cleared the rails due to several impending southbound trains. Here they are approaching the grade crossing.

About 30 minutes later southbound train Q-439 led by CSX #940 came by.

After the Q-439 cleared the track gang got permission to put their hi-rail back on the rails and continue their track patrol south. Here one of the gang is guiding the driver backwards onto the tracks.

Once the truck is lined up on the rails the crew manually drops the rail wheels and locks them into place.

The rail wheels will lift the front road wheels just clear of the rails while the rear road wheels maintain contact with the rails to provide the traction needed. The steering column also gets locked in position. The driver only needs to control the brake and accelerator pedals. Here is the hi-rail now heading south along the west shore of the Hudson River. When I worked as a train dispatcher for NJT I hi-railed between Port Jervis, NY and Suffern, NY. It was a unique way to see the railroad.

Unfortunately, due to time constraints, the Q-439 and the hi-rail were the only two trains I was able to photograph this day.

Did you hear that there is a possibility that Amtrak might start using the FEC between Jax and West Palm? Supposedly Florida is giving $70 million or so for the project.

Here are some random shots I took last month along the bike path on the Westside of Seattle's Interbay yard, located just north of downtown.
