I believe this was Roanoke Island's first ladder truck. Although marked as "1711", it later became Ladder 1704.



It is a 1963 American LaFrance 85' that once ran with Newport News, Virginia.



It was eventually sold (2001?) to another Firepics member - John Friis. John, do you still own this ALF?

Here is the reason for Roanoke Island's new color scheme - The FD purchased this 2000 Pierce Dash in approximately 2001/2002. It was a Pierce demo. They like the color and decided to have anything purchased in the future be red and white.

You have seen in previous posts that equipment trucks are common in Outer Banks FD's.



Roanoke Island runs two - one from each station.



Equipment Truck 1705 is a 1980 Chevrolet Step Van.

Old Engine 1706, this time a four door International.



This was recently sold to Columbia, North Carolina.



1990 International/Emergency One 1250/900.

The newest addition to the Roanoke Island roster is Engine 1706, a 2006 Pierce Enforcer with a 1250/1000 and job number 17911.

I still laugh everytime I look at the warning lights on Roanoke Island's old Engine 1707. Like the other Ford C, I photographed this in 1995 just prior to it being sold.

Something just does not seem right with them lights on the cab.

Here is a neat tanker. Tanker 1708 is a 1990 International/Carolina Fire Master complete with a 300gpm pump and carries 3000 gallons of water.



It is kept at the Wanchese station.

I don't have any information on this old Engine 1709, except that it is an International. Note that it is marked Wanchese on the door (in addition to Roanoke Island), so I suspect it was an original Wanchese piece prior the the two FD's joining.

Another "1709" no longer in service is this interesting hose reel unit.



I believe it was originally a 1964 Ford 800/American LaFrance 750/500. In 1992, Emergency One rehabed the unit to include a large hose reel for 5 inch hose.



This Ford was sold to Columbia, North Carolina.





Sounds like Columbia, North Carolina has ended up with a variety of Outer Banks fire trucks. Anyone ever visited Columbia, NC?

The current Engine 1709 is yet another interesting LDH unit.



2000 International 4900/Emergency One 1250/750 complete with 2000 feet of 5 inch hose.



E-1 serial number 121266.

Squad 1710 is kept at the Manteo station and is a combination squad, air, and command unit. It includes a 25kw generator.

We will finish our visit at the Roanoke Island VFD with their Storm unit.



The FD has has a variety of older military trucks kept at both stations. Storm 17 was photographed in 2001 at the Wanchese station and is a 1967 Kaiser 5 ton 6x6 M-54.

I found this in Roanoke Island at the Weeping Radish Brewery.



I believe it is a 1964 Mercedes Benz.



I am not real good with foreign apparatus.....anyone have any additional info?

Not far from the Manteo Roanoke Island VFD station is the Dare County airport. It is located just down the street from the NC acquarium in Roanoke Island.



FD protection is provided by several pieces of apparatus staffed by workers at the airport.

The primary crash truck at the airport is this 1977 Walters B1500 that was rehabed in 1990 by CRE.



It has a 1250/1500 with 180 gallons of foam in addition to 450 pounds of Dry Chem.



It originally saw service at the Raleigh-Durham Airport in North Carolina.



This crash truck was photographed in 2005.
