I was down in NYC for a few hours on Sunday and on my way back I noticed a loom up north of I-95 while travelling through Bridgeport, CT. I commented on it and my wife asked "are you going?" I hopped off the highway, turned around and started toward the smoke.
While estimating where the fire was, I got off the highway. As I was on the exit ramp, Bridgeport Engine 10 went by. I followed them into the scene. The fire was in a 1-1/2 story Cape style building at the top of a hill that had required very long feeder lays (1/3-1/2 mile.) The companies had knocked the fire down by the time I walked up, but I managed a few shots.
I brought my wife to Manhattan to attend a bachelorette party and headed up to get gas on the Bronx/westchester County line (cheapest in the area.) My plans had been to buff on the west side of Westchester County in Yonkers, as they've been seeing some action recently, while still allowing easy access into the Bronx, who have also been busy. After getting gas, I turned the radios on and started towards Yonkers. Within two minutes, New Rochelle put out a call reporting a single 9-1-1 call for a dwelling fire-I put the address into the GPS and found it to be 2.9 miles and 9 minutes away. I figured there was no way this was an actual job until dispatch updated the companies that the single caller was reporting smoke coming from the building and that they had banged on doors and windows and believed nobody was home.
The first arriving company reported smoke showing from the upper floors of a 2-1/2 story wood frame structure. Upon his arrival, the I/C transmitted a 10-75, which brought the working fire assignement. Companies took about an hour to bring this job under control.
Hey there firepixers! It's been a long time! Figured since i am in a new city and state, i would post some new pics!

At 9:00 am WFPS got toned out a reported structure fire. Crews got on scene and found heavy fire from the century-old 2 story building. Crews were pulled out and a defensive attack was launched and 2 more aerials were special requested to the scene. Crews are unable to get to the seat of the fire on the first floor and excavators have been called in to assist with gaining access to it. when I got on scene over 9 hours after it started flames were still visible from one of the first story businesses, and 3 aerials were in operation. all but 3 pumps had been cleared from the scene and it's expected that the fire will burn well into the night. when the fire started the temperature was around -40, with it warming up to -30C throughout the day.
Units on Scene: Engine 11, Engine 4, Engine 103, Ladder 11, Rescue 11, Engine 9, Engine 3, Ladder 13, Safety 5, Platoon 1, Fire investigator 2, Ambulance 11, Medical Supervisor 75, Rehab 7, Engine 7, Ladder 21, District Chief 3, multiple other engines and rescues to switch out crews throughout the day.
A police officer sitting at the intersection of Greenfield Rd and Michigan Ave witnessed a single car MVA. Upon arrival of the first companies the I/C reported that a significant extrication would be necessary and special called additional units to the scene.
The vehicle went through a bus stop, disloged a fire hydrant (pieces can be seen in the last two photos illustrating how far it was thrown) and was finally stopped upon impact into a tree. 2 victims were extricated, one was non-viable on scene and the other was transported with significant traumatic injuries.
Detroit Companies arrived to find a dwelling "going throughout" at E Davison and Buffalo. Upon his arrival, Chief 8 reported that a defensive posture would be taken for this fire. A ladder pipe was used primarily on the fire building while handlines were stretched to protect exposures
Attleboro firefighters arrived to find a fire condition in the rear of a 2-1/2 story wood frame structure. The fire extended up, resulting in companies being pulled back to a defensive posture.
The fire occurred the day after the region's first appreciable snowfall and sub-freezing temperatures resulted in some slippery on-scene conditions
