As the Coordinator of Algonquin College's Fire Rescue program, in Ottawa, Ontario, I have a keen interest in what other educational facilities are running for training rigs, that don't respond to calls. I don't think this topic has been started before, so here goes.
Algonquin College just scrapped this truck, a 1990 Spartan Gladiator/E-One 1250/300, that originally served Cambridge, Ontario. It was scrapped as the transmission finally died, and there were a myriad of other expensive issues. We just replaced it with a 2002 HME/Fort Garry purchased from Ottawa Fire. Photos to come soon.
Yesterday I visited Brindlee Mountain Fire Apparatus in Union Grove, Alabama (south of Huntsville) in search of a used rescue and engine for an industrial fire department. They claim to be the largest used fire truck dealer in the country. They sold 540 trucks in the last year. They both purchase and resell and broker sales by fire departments. They recently purchased most of Kansas City, MO FD's fleet for resale. As the new ones go into service the old ones come to Union Grove. Many have been resold as export. They buy and sell trucks in the U.S. and Canada. They have eight bays in one shop and four in another. They do mechanical and body rebuilds including paint, I estimate there were at least 80 trucks on site yesterday. The facility also operates E-4 (E\-One custom) for the Brindlee Mountain VFD during the day Monday to Friday as they can have it fully staffed and respond quickly. Here are a few pictures.
Around 2:58 this morning Las Vegas Fire and Rescue received numerous calls for flames showing from the rear of a strip mall. According to the Press Release that the PIO put out. Station 3 is right across the street from the scene. They saw flames and heavy smoke on arrival.
The fire ended up at 3 Alarms and I almost did not go as when I saw the second alarm come across my phone I figured they would have it knocked down very quickly. I left the house when the third alarm came over. The fire did 500k worth of damage.
