  IFBA Convention
Posted by: maxim - 01-03-2017, 11:16 AM - Forum: Fire Service Related - Replies (1)

The 2017 IFBA Convention will be held at the Hilton in Downtown Indianapolis from August 23rd to August 26th.  Many interesting activities are in the works including a visit to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Keep an eye on the ifba.org website and I will try to keep members of this forum updated.

Maxim

(There are several older Maxims in the Indy area that have been restored by apparatus buffs in the area. Most are from the 50's and 60' and quite a few "S" models )

  Howe
Posted by: Aaronw - 12-29-2016, 10:12 PM - Forum: Apparatus Photos - Replies (310)

So down in the Fire Service General Discussion I mentioned a lack of Howe Fire Apparatus in the library.

As they say put up or shut up... Fireman

I can't do anything about getting a book on Howe published but maybe we can get the company a little attention here.

An abridged history taken from Walter McCall's American Fire Engine Manufacturers:

The Howe Engine Company was founded in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1872 building piston and rotary pumps including one powered by horses walking in a circle around the pumper. by 1900 Howe was building horse drawn, gasoline engine powered pumpers, and they built their first automotive piece of fire apparatus in 1907.

In 1917 the company moved to Anderson, Indiana and changed their name to the Howe Fire Apparatus Company.

Howe received substantial contracts building fire apparatus for the US Military in both World Wars, building more than 100 during WW1 and nearly 1000 during WW2.

As a Midwest builder Howe decided it needed a gateway into the East and West coast markets which led to the company buying Oren of Virginia in 1961 and Coast in California in 1965. Howe remained a family owned business until Grumman purchased the company in 1976. Grumman continued to use the Howe name on apparatus built in the Anderson factory, until closing that facility in 1980. The name continued for a few more years in the old Oren factory, but was discontinued sometime in the early 1980s.

A look inside the engine room of Trenton New Jersey Engine 6's former firehouse a while back. This station was closed by the city not too long after I had taken this shot.

Any Word On New Las Vegas Rigs?
Posted by: nozzleman - 12-24-2016, 12:40 PM - Forum: Apparatus Scuttlebut - Replies (18)

Last year I was told by members at Station 1 that Las Vegas was going with Smeal for their new rigs. That was backed up earlier this year but I have yet to see anything on the new rigs. Does anybody have any information on when they will be delivered or what the statues of them is?

  Support vehicles
Posted by: Aaronw - 12-23-2016, 08:47 PM - Forum: Apparatus Photos - Replies (48)

I had a look around and couldn't find a current thread for this, although there are some in various other threads.

I thought I'd start this for the many support vehicles out there that let fire crews do their job better.

Pretty much anything that doesn't directly fight the fire, fuel tenders, light plants, breathing support, rehab vehicles, canteens, repair / wreckers, salvage trucks etc.

I'll start off with a fuel tender and repair truck from Ventura County Fire Department in California

VCFD Fuel Tender 1
