  Happy New Year!
Posted by: edburke - 01-01-2015, 01:07 PM - Forum: Non-Fire Service related - Replies (4)

Happy New Year from Firepics!

To the membership, I wish everyone a happy and prosperous New Year.  I figured I'd start a topic on resolutions.  Some can be fun, some can be serious and others are completely unattainable.  What are yours for 2015?

Here are mine:

1.  Try to get to 200 lbs.  I went from 275 to 235 in 2014, but fell off the wagon at the end of the year.  I'm hoping to resolve my Diabetes with this.

2.  Get to more fires to photograph.

  Young Crusaders
Posted by: Turborich - 12-30-2014, 12:30 AM - Forum: Apparatus Photos - Replies (57)

This past June a lifelong dream of mine was realized when I drove home a 1968 Young Crusader from the Kenilworth Fire District in Tonawanda, NY. Having loved the look of the Crusader (a look that you either love or hate) since seeing Ardsley, NY's in the early 80's at a parade I knew at age 5 I would eventually own one (product of a mis-spent youth). Growing up ( or so they called it ) and becoming more educated about fire apparatus I found myself even more enthralled by the design nuances of the Crusader- the things incorporated into a design that was truly built for a firefighter in mind. The rest is history, and shop number 68-243 is proudly owned and maintained by me (with a little help from my cadre of mechanic friends).

Life stories aside, years before I purchased my engine, I had run into a good friend and apparatus historian and happened to mention the fact that I loved the rigs- a week later he showed up while I was on shift with a manilla envelope that I had since forgotten about. A few weeks back while rifleing through some paperwork I found it- 'ya know that feeling when you find a twenty in a pair of old jeans? I found 13 of 'em.

We'll start it out with the obvious-

  Omaha, NE - Working Fire - December 23, 2014
Posted by: firesafe91 - 12-26-2014, 09:37 PM - Forum: Fire Scene Photos - Replies (22)

A full first-alarm assignment consisting of 4 engines, 2 trucks, 1 heavy rescue, 1 air support unit, 1 medic unit, 2 battalion chiefs and the EMS supervisor were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 4805 South 22nd Street in Omaha. Engine and Truck 31 arrived and reported heavy smoke showing. Upon entry, crews encountered heavy fire in the basement of the structure. Two additional medic units plus several support units (command post, investigators, etc.) responded above the first alarm.

The structure was rooming house that had been subdivided into 22 units. Media reports indicate that there were no working smoke detectors in the building. In addition, the property had a history of code violations.

Crews removed one male and one female from the basement. Both were transported from scene in extremely critical condition. The female victim died a short time later. The male victim is still hospitalized in critical condition.

I have some pretty powerful images of the crews performing CPR and removing the victims to ambulances; however I will not post these images as they may violate the FirePics posting guidelines.

The first image shows the front of the structure. Engine 31 was supplied by a plug in front of the building with a single section of 5" hose.

  Air horns on Pierce Saber
Posted by: Juice - 12-26-2014, 04:53 PM - Forum: Q & A - Replies (3)

Has anyone else had problems with the air horns of a Pierce Saber, particularly the newer ones? We have a 2011, and about 2 months ago, they started off intermittent when we'd try using them, and then quit working all together a few weeks ago. Fast forward to this week, we were able to knock open a valve running up under the cab, and they began working again. To know how to approach it, should it ever happen again, is it really the valve, or is there a bigger problem?

Thanks,

Trav!

  2-Alarm Dwelling Fire- Baltimore 12-22-14
Posted by: BCFDphotoman - 12-22-2014, 04:39 PM - Forum: Fire Scene Photos - Replies (10)

Early this AM a dwelling fire was reported in the Highlandtown section of east Baltimore. First in units had heavy fire and smoke throughout.

Everyone was reported out. As crews advanced inside they couldn't get much further in than the living room due to ectreme hoarding conditions.

Battalion Chief 1 withdrew companies and went exterior. He made it a working fire and about 15 minutes later struck out the second alarm. Most of the fire was knocked down within 30 miinutes. When I arrived there wasn't much to see. One civilian was transported to the hospital priority 2.
