MATT LEE REPRINTS 3 APPARATUS BOOKS
Posted by: GA FIREMAN - 12-19-2014, 06:17 PM - Forum: Fire Service Related - No Replies

If you are a SPAAMFAA member, you will already have received a flyer from Matt regarding the reprinting of 3 of his 4 books, if not this may be of interest:

A. Seagrave 125 ANNIVERSARY - 392 Pages & 1,000 Fotos

B. PICTORIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRE ENGINE - 320 pages & 700+ Fotos

C. PICTORIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRE ENGINE - Decade of the 1920's - 4323 Pages & 850+ fotos

The books cost $70 each, including shipping, or $175 for all 3 with free shipping.  I purchased all 3 of these books when they were published back in the 90's, and consider them to be in the top 5 or 6 of all the books published dealing with apparatus.

Spoke with Matt earlier today, and the other good news is that Pictorial History of the Fire Engine, Vol 3 is due out this summer.  It will be about 500 pages with 1,000 fotos.  Can't wait to see this one!  Volume 4 covering the 1940's is also progressing well.

  Ground Ladder Compliment
Posted by: jbang45 - 12-15-2014, 04:55 PM - Forum: Fire Service Related - Replies (12)

We're in the final stages of specing out our tower ladder and we're running into 2 options for ground ladders that are causes some healthy arguments. First of we're a small department consisting of 6 firefighters per. We have an area of town with a lot of triple deckers(we're a northeast mill town) another area with a apartment complex (5 buildings) whihc are 3 stories. the rest of the town is a mix of ranches and colonials. Option A- 40' with poles, 35', 28',20' roof, 16' roof, 14' fresno, 10; folding.

Option B- 2-35', 2-28',20' roof, 16' roof, 14' fresno, 10; folding

Option A's supporters want it for rescue capabilities on the 3rd floor of the complexs and the triple deckers

Option B's supporters feel the 40' will take too much man power and will never be used, and feel that more 28's and 35's will fit us better operationally. and both of those ladder should reach a 3rd floor if needed.

please help! Your opinions will help and may include facts not though of.

  FWD Apparatus Blueprints
Posted by: Guest - 12-14-2014, 09:16 PM - Forum: Photo Requests-NO IMAGES IN THIS FORUM! - No Replies

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this.

I am in need of blueprints, measurements, and/or drawing of an early '50s FWD open-cab pumper, an example of which is attached. Does anyone know if any of the old FWD brochures/catalogs might show this info?

  Firepics Monthly?
Posted by: edburke - 12-12-2014, 10:45 PM - Forum: Notices - Replies (19)

After looking at some publishing options, I am considering releasing a monthly e-zine of Firepics content to supplement the budget of the website and to be used to recruit new members.  It would be free to all members through a pdf download on the site and available for 99 cents as a Kindle Single.

Of course, this would constitute a modification of the user agreement/posting guidelines.  I would ask for releases from those whose images/content I wished to use, and compensation would be disbursed after the month's run of the e-zine.  Initially, there would be a diversion into the Firepics operating fund-probably 50% with the remaining 50% distributed equally among the contributors. In example, if there is a $100 profit, $50 would go to paying the webhosting, domain licensing, software licensing and legal representation, while each contributor would receive $5.  At a $1000 profit, those numbers increase to $50 per person. The payments would be made upon receipt of payment from Kindle for the month that the images/article appeared. Any sales of the e-zine after disbursement has been made (back-issue sales) would not receive a disbursement. These numbers have the potential to be significantly more than any of the print magazines are offering.  As time goes on, I would like to attract advertisers, which would allow for 100% of the residuals to be divided among the contributors. Free membership extensions would also be given to contributors. (still trying to figure out something for Lifetime Members)

Obviously, this will not work without the support of the membership, so I'm throwing it out for discussion.  I'm not married to the idea, so do not feel that you are insulting me if you are not in favor.

  Tillered "engine"
Posted by: johndanger - 12-07-2014, 09:03 PM - Forum: Apparatus Scuttlebut - Replies (15)

A few years ago I had an instructor in the academy that told us "San Jose or some department near there" had experimented with "tillered engines" that involved manually dropping the pump drive in place to the trailer. I have never seen anything like this, does anyone know anything about this or is he mistaken.
