Buffalo firefighters responded in the late afternoon of October 25, 2014 to the intersection of Walden Avenue and Genesee Street after Fire Alarm received several calls reporting a structure fire. Arriving crews reported heavy fire from a two and one half story wood frame at 5 Walden Avenue. An extra two engines and one ladder were called for, followed shortly by the balance of the second alarm. High winds helped spread the blaze to adjoining structures at 1 and 3 Walden Avenue. Firefighters fought the fire defensively using three tower ladders, three Blitz Fire nozzles, and four 2 1/2" handlines. An excavator was brought to assist in overhaul. Damage was set at $250,000.
Ladder 6 (with spare rig) sets up. Note the fire tornado.
Back in 2003 my fire dept sold our 1988 Ford C800/Eone pumper to a fire dept. by the name of FLAT ROCK. I was told they were down south but who knows if any of the guys really knew. I can't seem to find anything on the old truck or a fire dept that may have that name, that had a truck like that. Anyone have any ideas?
I am in need of some pics of FDNY's HazTac ambulances. I really need a straight on shot of each side and the rear of the box. I am wanting to make a 1/25th scale replica of one. Any help would be appreciated.
They don't have much variety anymore! There are 2- 103' Spartan Quints at Engine 1 & 5. Engines 2,3,4,6,7 & 8 are All Spartan Engines the same. The new engines have 1,500 GPM pumps, a twin-agent Class A/Class B onboard FoamPro proportioning system, 500 GPM booster tanks, and fully enclosed tool and ladder storage. The compartment layouts are standardized as well.
Current hose loads are:
Front bumper/trash line - 100 ft. 1.75 inch hose with a fog tip in a horseshoe load. 100 additional feet dead-loaded in the bottom of the compartment. This compartment has a treadplate cover.
Two 1.75-inch crosslays with fog tips, over the pump.
1,000 GPM capacity deck pipe, top mounted. The deck pipe is offset to the driver's side to accomodate the vertical exhaust stack on the officer's side.
Two 2.5-inch preconnects in the rear bed. They are currently 400 feet. One has a fog tip, the other has a gated wye. There is additional 2.5 inch hose dead-loaded under the preconnects. There is also a short bed of 2.5 inch on the right rear over the internal ladder rack. These sections are for FDC and sprinkler feeds, etc.
The supply load is still 5-inch LDH. We carry 1050 feet, in the bed and a 25-foot pony in a compartment. We're considering moving the 50-foot section to a compartment.
The pumps have automatic controls, rear-mount LDH intakes, and some other nice features like a flow meter for the handlines and color coded valves and hose on the preconnects.
I am trying to track down as many former Syracuse, New York apparatus as possible. I am particularly interested in locating any of the 1974 Hendrickson Pierce Hi-Stream pumpers and any of the many Sutphen towers several of which were taken in on trade by Sutphen for new trucks.
Any photos or information on Syracuse rigs serving in their second homes would be most appreciated.

Just after 2PM, Station 7 was dispatched to a "car on its top" at 122nd Ave. and Powell Blvd.
On arrival, E7 reported the car was upright, but there were 2 people trapped.
It turned out that 4 vehicles were involved. A pickup traveling south on 122nd hit the rear of a car, then jumped the sidewalk, went through a chain-link fence, then hit a parked car and an armored truck in a parking lot. 4 people were taken to the hospital; 2 who were extricated from the first car and the 2 people in the pickup truck.
