  Boston Multiples 2013
Posted by: maxim - 01-04-2014, 12:01 PM - Forum: Fire Service Related - Replies (5)

I know you all have been waiting with baited breath so her is a list of the multiples attended by each company in Beantown in 2013.

This is of course not official, and I am not even sure the nmumbers match up, but this is just a hobby.

Any insights are welcome.

The list is the company, the number of multiples the were assigned to and the number they of multiples the were first due at.  This does not mean they got there first, just the running assignment.

the numbers do not include comapnies assigned as "fire detaills"

I know that in truth the numbers don't quite amtch up but it is very close.

It would appear the Ashmont/Mattapan area is the place for multiples with Hyde Park catching up, although there appears to be a pretty wide geographical spread of the fires.

I am a little suprised about L-16, but they sort of sit between the areas noted above, and the fact that making a lot of multiples does not necessarily mean they aree in the first due area

Thanks

General Alarm, Framingham, MA, March 1968

Ed's recent post of a fire during a snowstorm brought this one to mind.

Sometime after midnight, Nat Whittemore, TV-4 photographer and I set

out in Nat's car for a fire in Framingham, about 10 miles away. It was

snowing with about 6" already on the ground and about 6" more expected.

We found a 5-story brick building well involved. We heard the fire began

in the cellar of a paint store on the first floor.

I'm gonna share the conditions first.  the top pic is the dash of my car, the other, a typical New Englander's view of the snowstorm we are in the middle of.  The red dot is roughly where the fire occurred.

Iroquois Theatre Fire, 12/30/1903 - Chicago, IL

I have a few questions regarding this fire:

1. It says when the first due arrived, they thought it was a false alarm until they tried to open the doors. Wouldn't there be smoke visible upon arrival?

2. They also say the fire was contained in 15 minutes because the heat was so intense that the fire consumed everything that would burn.  If there's that much heat trapped in the theatre, would that be a risk for a flashover, smoke explosion or backdraft when FFs opened the doors?

3. Had the exit doors been able to open outward, would the fresh air from multiple sources feed the fire, like it did when the stage folks opened the rear doors, or would that have properly vented the fire and smoke, buying time for people to escape?

Evanston IL 2nd Alarm Davis and Oak December 29 2013
Posted by: Guest - 12-31-2013, 09:27 AM - Forum: Fire Scene Photos - Replies (40)

Took in this job in the wee hours of Sunday morning. The fire was in the downtown area at Davis and Oak. I arrived just as they were getting water to the Skokie tower ladder. The first image shows an aerial view of the buildings. The fire involved 2 restaurants and a nail salon and threatened some additional similar occupancies. This fire was very noteworthy because it is the only time I can recall 2 tiller trucks operating at a single fire..around here tillers are a very rare beast. There was a catastrophic collapse, most likely due to the failure of the truss roof structure, but it was well anticipated and all members were well clear. This is the first batch of images..

  Fire in a House Lenexa, Kansas 13216 W 95th St 12-30-2013
Posted by: MFD76 - 12-30-2013, 10:29 PM - Forum: Fire Scene Photos - Replies (4)

An overcast calm sixteen degree morning in the land of OZ. Toto and Dorothy are vacationing in a warmer climate this time of year.

Johnson County Fire Alarm dispatched a reported fire in a house at 13216 W 95th Street in the Kansas City Suburb of Lenexa, Kansas with auto aide units from Overland Park. Caller advised fire on the second floor rear of the house. The majority of the Kansas City Metro Fire Departments change groups at 0700. Most of the Johnson County Fire Departments are the exception changing groups at 0800. I decided after being relieved at OFD Engine 1 to take a fire. Lenexa is an aggressive suburban fire department, they make good stops on fire.

08:13 Fire Alarm dispatched a regular alarm assignment: Lenexa Ladder 91, Squad 91, Engine 92, BC 91 and Overland Park Quint 42, Engine 42, BC 45.

BC 91 requested an additional fire unit.

08:44 Fire Alarm dispatched an additional engine : Lenexa Engine 91 (reserve-engine)

Four blocks from Lenexa Fire House 1 Ladder 91 arrived on scene with smoke showing from the roof of a two story wood frame. BC 91 arrived and positioned on side C and reported fire showing from the second floor. Squad 91 advanced one small from Ladder 91 to the second floor. Ladder 91 laddered side B and side D of the second floor. Engine 92 arrived captain and firemen and ran one small inside and FAO assisted Ladder 91 FAO. Engine 42 arrived and ran a second small to the second floor and opened up the celling with Squad 91. Quint 42 was assigned RIT. Ladder 91 FAO requested a pumper reverse out from the ladder. Engine 92 reverse laid from Ladder 91 to the plug and began relay pumping. BC 91 requested an additional fire unit. Engine 91 (reserve-engine) was dispatched and responded with the off going work group from Fire House 1. Lenexa made a good stop on this working fire.

Engine 91 (reserve-engine) just made the left turn at 95th and Pflumm RD responding emergency from Fire House 1. This was the last unit purchased with only a Federal PA electronic siren. After this purchase Lenexa added eQ2b sirens they have since returned to REAL Q2b sirens.

Lenexa Engine 91 (reserve-engine). This is one of the few real fire engines left in the metro. No over the road trucker grill here, just smooth front sheet metal the way fire engines and trucks should look. This was second to the last of nine Emergency One Hurricane Chassis purchased by Lenexa from 1987-2002.

Soon to be replaced Overland Park Fire Department Engine 42 a 2000 E\-One Cyclone II one of two purchased. The bells on Engine 42 and Quint 42 were donated by a civilian husband and wife that adopted OPFD Fire House 2. It was a rather long process from the city and fire department to reach approval for the bells donation and placement on the two apparatus. Lawrence, Lenexa, and Olathe purchase bells as standard equipment on apparatus.
