  Trucks that are cross-staffed
Posted by: Juice - 12-09-2012, 03:55 PM - Forum: Q & A - Replies (6)

Hey gang, in regards to departments that cross staff trucks, such as;

A haz mat truck stationed at (station 1) is manned by 2 guys from station 1, 1 guy from station 2, and 1 guy from station 3. When a call goes out for the haz mat truck, how do most departments respond with the guys from stations 2 and 3? Do you take an entire truck out of service because 1 guy steps off? Do the remaining guys on the engine get assigned something on the scene until all members are back together?

The reason I ask this, is I learned recently of a department (18 stations) that has a dive unit at HQ. 1 member from several engines will meet at HQ upon a water rescue dispatch, and while they're gone, that engine still runs, just 1 man less. Last question, what happens if there is a contract with the city saying staffing is (X amount of guys) per truck, and that number can't be met when another truck is being cross staffed?

Thanks for any answers,

Trav!

Richmond VA Fire Station No. 17
Posted by: Truckman - 11-29-2012, 12:25 PM - Forum: Fire Station Photos - Replies (44)

On a cold afternoon of November 7, 2012, the Mayor and Officials of the City of Richmond along with the members of the Fire and Emergency Services Department dedicated new Fire Station Number 17. It houses Quint 17, Engine 17, Brush Unit 17 and Battalion Chief 3. This site is on the eastern end of Canoe Run Park, located at 2211 Semmes Avenue.

The new three-bay, drive through single story facility, has 11,351 square feet of space and includes separate bunk rooms for the members and separate shower and toilet facilities, dayroom, kitchen and eating area, and offices. Also included are sleeping quarters for the battalion chief and station officer. Others features are a watch room, exercise room, study room, lockers for personal items and separate lockers for turn out gear. The new station will also house a cascade (breathing equipment) unit. Also the apparatus floor has air purification system above each bay, front and aft.

The station was built for LEED Gold certification, as it will reduce water use by 35%; improve energy efficiency by 24%; 75% construction waste recycled; contain low-emitting building materials; use controlled lighting and thermal comfort systems; water efficient landscaping and building recycling collection and storage areas.

It has all the latest features for a new building, including a sprinkler system for the entire station. Also, the apparatus floor doors have fast action four-folding inward doors. There are four wall mounted reels for water, 1-1/2 inch line, and four air hose reels, are mounted two on each side wall, front and aft. This is the first station to have the new digital readout for runs. Digital Station Alerting readouts are mounted in various locations of the station. At this time several more stations have them installed and all stations should be completed by the end of 2012.

The old Fire Station 17, located at 2901 Bainbridge Avenue was built and occupied after July 1, 1915, when Engine Co. No. 17 went into service.

  1964 International/Howe ex-National Park Service
Posted by: wfdstation42 - 11-28-2012, 03:37 AM - Forum: Member's Rigs/restoration Projects - Replies (15)

Here is my latest aquisition. As the title says, it is a 1964 International Harvester/Howe. Has a 250 GPM PTO pump and if memory serves a 100 gallon tank. The story I am told from the seller is it belonged to the Everglades National Park. I give this some creedence due to a government ID number being inside the glove box and the hard suction ends are engraved "NPS". He purchased it approx 10 years ago in excellent condition then let it sit outside for 6 years before building a warehouse sized garage. He moved the truck inside and let it sit another 4 years when he decided to sell it. I purchased it to add to my fleet because of its unique nature. The truck didn't run when purchased, the carb wasn't even installed on the engine. I have since got it running but the brake system is shot from sitting so long. New front wheel cylinders and shoes have been installed and new brake lines all around and rear wheel cylinders and shoes are next. Once it is mechanically sound then the rust repair and paint will happen as time and money allow.

If anyone here has any other pics of her or info based on the registration number I certainly would appreciate it.

  Easy single person meals?
Posted by: willman940 - 11-13-2012, 09:33 AM - Forum: Firehouse Kitchen - Replies (6)

Hi,

I recently Joined University Fire Department in Fairbanks Alaska. We don't always have shift meals, and apparently every rookie that comes in just eats complete junk for the majority of their probation.

I've gotten to the point were I don't want to do that anymore, and find most of the things I've been eating repulsive, but I have very little cooking knowledge or experience.

Do you guys know of any fairly easy meals that you can cooks for 1 or keeps alright for leftovers?

Thanks,

John

Broad Channel FD engine does not survive Sandy
Posted by: John Kenealy - 11-01-2012, 07:50 PM - Forum: Apparatus Photos - Replies (47)

Broad Channel FD, one of the volunteer departments in NYC posted this shot on their Facebook page. Point Breeze FD also lost some of their equipment, but their two engines survived. I am assuming this was burnt in the massive fire that destroyed 110 homes in the Breezy Point region of NYC.
