Last August, while driving on Fort Indiantown Gap (near Annville, north of Harrisburg, PA), I came upon these two pieces of fire apparatus. They appeared to be sitting outdoors and no one seemed to know what they were there for. There have been issues, to say the least, with funding the fire department at "The Gap" so one has to wonder why they would increase the size of their fleet.

Anyway, the first was lettered for "Naval Air Station Key West."

The second was lettered for the "Philadelphia Naval Shipyard"

  Riverheads VFD - Virginia

Here is a newer station that opened back in March of 2011 just outside of Staunton, Virginia.

The Riverheads Volunteer Fire Department is Station 25 in Augusta County. Station 25 is located just off of Route 11 in the Greenville area.

As with many new departments, getting started means used fire apparatus. The fire department operates an engine company, tanker, and a unique attack unit. In addition, the Staunton-Augusta Volunteer Rescue Squad operates an ambulance/medic unit from the station.

Engine 252 previously ran as Engine 102 in Augusta County and was painted yellow and white.

  A possible project
Posted by: kf6yvd - 06-10-2012, 01:40 PM - Forum: Member's Rigs/restoration Projects - Replies (3)

Have been offered a chance to buy a 57 ALF (S/N L-5473) for $1000. Needs paint, batteries and the carbs for it. Before i proceed I am trying to get a ideal what it would cost approx to purchase them. I have captured as much info as I could to track these down but am treading a bit into unfamiliar territory.

The engine number shows J8-27 and it looks to be a Owens J engine according to the manuals. Says the carbs are a Zenith downdraft carb (possibly 1 cylinder). Can some1 here steer me in the right direction to get a approximate costs on these units?

I debated about putting this under the Midwest topic, but there are quite a few photos and I thought that warranted it's own.

What started out being a quick visit to one Stillwater station ended up being a day long series of stops at all the stations. I must express my thanks to all the Officers and Firefighters with the Stillwater FD who were gracious enough to take time out of their day to move apparatus around and answer my questions.

  Easy tasty potato salad
Posted by: 1958 F.W.D. - 05-29-2012, 03:41 PM - Forum: Firehouse Kitchen - Replies (1)

I have been playing with this potato salad recipe for a while now, and I think I have finally come as close to getting it right as I will. This is fairly easy, and is good for a firehouse crew of 6-8 guys.

(1) five lb bag of standard russet potatoes, peeled and diced into 1/4" pieces

(1) package of bacon, cooked crisp, drained & chopped/diced.

3-4 heaping tablespoons mayo

3 tablespoons of white vinegar

3 tablespoons of sugar

1 tsp of coarse black pepper

1/2 tsp of cajun seasoning

Start by cooking the bacon in a frying pan or baking in the oven, turning often until crisp/drain on paper towel. While you are cooking the bacon, peel the potatoes.

Place the potatoes into the water and bring to a boil. Once the water comes to a boil it will not take long to cook- check frequently with a fork so that the fork goes through the semi-soft potato pieces. Drain into a colandar.

**VERY IMPORTANT** THIS IS CRITIAL TO STOP THE POTATO PIECES FROM COOKING!!!!! Fill the pot back up with COLD water. Immerse the drained potato pieces into the cold water and give a stir to shut down the cooking process. Re-drain them in the colandar, and rinse off with more cold water.

Mix in the mayo, bacon pieces, vinegar, sugar, pepper & cajun seasoning. Blend well. Chill for 1 hour.

This fire came in just after 8pm, first due companies arrived to find 4 dwellings well involved. Water problems made things even worse but they were able to darken down the main body of fire within about 30 minutes. No one was seriously injured. Albany FD fire investigation, NY State OFPC and the ATF are working to determine the cause of the blaze.

Traveled to Appleton last week for pre-build meetings on our new rescue. I may have taken a view photos while I was at the plant. Won't post them all right away but here's a couple of teasers.

Now that I've been putting this rig back in shape, figured it'd be good to start my own thread. She's safely tucked away in the shop, got a new pair of CJ184 beacons on, if the weather holds out we'll be painting the doors next week. Targt date is to be at the ATCA Truck Show in Macungie on 16 June.
