Do we need to drive a non-essential vehicle this way??
Posted by: Rheems1 - 09-13-2011, 10:12 PM - Forum: Rants and Raves - Replies (9)

Alright, I am not normally one to start a rants and raves topic but I feel the need to write one for this. Let me start off by saying I am an 18 year member of the volunteer fire service currently serving as Lieautenant at my department. This rant revolves around a video found on Youtube (go figure), there was a video posted recently of Providence, RI Canteen 1 going to a fire call posted from inside. In this video the canteen truck with lights and sirens going, goes into the wrong lane and runs red lights on several occasions. Now, I am not throwing stones at people for things I am not guilty of.. I have driven the engine on the wrong of the side on occasion (just like this unit, my lane of traffic was clear and no one was harmed)... I think my problem with this comes from the fact that it is a canteen truck, I understand the need for rehab and I can understand that dehydration is a huge problem but I am not so sure that this unit needed lights and sirens and I am very sure that they had no need to be in the other lane. I applaud them wanting to get there quickly and I am sure that they do a great job... but some prudence might be required when responding in a canteen truck... watching this video fascinated me and also dissapointed me...I think the actions were unsafe, the driving.. while no one was harmed were uncalled for and I am dissapointed by watching it. Just my 2 cents, maybe I am starting with my period that this got to me...but it struck me as bad and I wanted to share.

NOTES

The gas company was NOT at the house, it was at another house.

A neighbor rescued one of the two trapped. Both residents got out.

House was fully involved when police got there 4 to 5 minutes after dispatch.

I got there around 6 to 8 minutes after dispatch.

Now for the photos...

Been chatting back and forth with this guy who has a truck for sale on EBay in Maryland.

1976 Mack CF600/Thibault/Hamerly 100ft Ladder Only 31,435 miles. Mack Maxi-Dyne 6 Cylinder Diesel Engine w/ Turbo and Turbine 375 Horsepower with Jake Brake. Allison HT740D 4 Speed Automatic Transmission (rare in a Mack truck). Gross Vehicle Weight Rating 36,940 lbs 11ft10in high 8ft wide 35ft long. This was previously in service in The City of York, Pennsylvania as Ladder "B".

Thibault 100ft rear mount aerial ladder Last certified in May 2009. Body by Hamerly Custom Productions (Chester911's plug!) Ladder has pre-piped 3" waterway up first fly with 1000GPM Elkhart Select-O-Matic Nozzle. Ladder also has intercom system to talk to person at top and also 2-120volt outlets at top of ladder. 4 Hydraulic outriggers at rear of truck. "NO SMOKE" Engine exhaust system (filters diesel exhaust). Cab seats 4 people...2 up front and 2 in rear jump-seats. Michelin 11R20 Tires on front with 90% tread remaining. Rear has Bridgestones 11R20 tires with 60% tread remaining

Truck has 5 very large cabinets (including one for 4-SCBA's and 7-air bottles) and 1 small compartment. 2-Federal Power Light Model 184-A3 Warning Lights as well as many other warning lights on side and rear of truck

Full set of Duo-Safety ladders (1-12', 2-16' roof ladders / 2-28', 2-35' extension ladders/1-40' bangor extension ladder w poles). All ladders are wood except one of the 35' extension ladders is aluminum. All ladders are in top-notch brand new shape. Heavy custom fit tarp for top of truck under aerial ladder for hose and tool storage and cover for ladder controls.

Misc. mounting brackets for pike poles, axes, spades, pry bars etc. This ladder truck is in great condition and everything mechanically and electrically works! Would make great truck for changing light bulbs, hanging christmas tree lights, painting roofs, birthday parties, or can be put back in service as a fire truck. There is some rust on the inner front fenders, and left front fender outer chrome trim piece. The whole truck could use a good wax job and a few touch-up spots. There is a small dent in right rear and a few small dents on lower rear taiboard/ bumper. But not a bad body at all for it's age! Truck drives like a dream too! Once the turbo and turbine spool up, this baby sounds like a jet plane coming down the road! I would not hestitate to drive this truck across the USA. Come out and test drive it before you bid if you would like. If you have any other questions, feel free to call me anytime at 443-398-0174. Prefer cash at time of pick-up but also accept certified bank check or paypal if need be.

Starting bid is $4,900 US. Email Andy with questions: andydrew7777777@peoplepc.com

I thought I'd start a Mountain thread for all the great apparatus rarely seen up there. I stopped at the ski town of Copper Mountain yesterday to get some photos, their station is amazing and photos of it are on the stations page.

First up is Engine 814, the summer time engine. Yes, that is copper colored paint!

  Westchester County NY Fire Apparatus
Posted by: TacSupport1 - 07-27-2011, 11:29 AM - Forum: Apparatus Photos - Replies (20)

This past week, I was in NY/NJ for a family reunion in NJ. On Thursday, July 21st, I had the opportunity to take a photo hunt in Westchester County (New York, 1st county north of NYC/Bronx) and a brief sweep through the northern Bronx. I managed to get all photos within 10 hours, yet there was so much I wanted to photograph, I ended up missing out on a lot of apparatus I wanted to shoot and friends I wanted to visit. I apologize for no captions on the photos, too tired, if you have a question just ask. Hope you enjoy these photos (at the following link)

  1979 Chevrolet/Hamerly Junior Pumper
Posted by: Guest - 07-21-2011, 08:34 PM - Forum: Member's Rigs/restoration Projects - Replies (49)

I was advised tonight that I am the proud new owner of Thompsontown, PA (Juniata County) Fire Company's 1979 Chevrolet C65/Hamerly Junior Pumper. It has a 1,000 gpm Waterous pump with a 500 gallon tank and a corrosion-free fiberglass high-side rescue style compartment body complete with the Hamerly trademark orange and white "hockey stick" paint design. It is Hamerly serial #JP-II-1426 and has 14,000 original miles on it. It is a one-owner rig.

She is in excellent shape but needs just a tune up and state inspection. Unfortunatley she wont be home in time for this weekends Cradle of Liberty SPAAMFFA muster in Media, PA but will be next year for sure. This is my "first".

Here is an older photo of her from the Youngstownfire.com site photo credit to GA Dave.

For those that truly know me and know of my fascination with Hamerly, you know how happy I am!

Many Thanks to Cradle of Liberty President Bill Anderson for his assistance and knowledge.

  Bureau of Land Management
Posted by: Aaronw - 07-20-2011, 04:49 PM - Forum: Apparatus Photos - Replies (35)

The United States Bureau of Land Management has the largest firefighting organization of the 4 Department of Interior land management agencies (the US Forest Service is the largest but is part of the Dept of Agriculture). The BLM was established in 1946 to replace the General Land Office. It is responsible for the management of 264 million acres of land, the largest area covered by a land management agency in the US. Unlike the USFS and NPS that manage land selected for its scenic and/or economic value, the BLM primarily manages land in the west that wasn't claimed during the homesteading period of US history.

BLM California Desert District (Southern California) DOI Model 14, 500 gpm pto, 500 gallon tank, crew 5

The BLM in California have a history of using apparatus designed by the California Department of Forestry. The Department of Interior spec Model 14 (4x4) / Model 15 (2wd) was based on the CDF Model 14/15 with modifications made to suit the BLM (primarily more compartment space). This design was started by the BLM but has become a standard type 3 engine design for the DOI agencies in California (BLM, National Park Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, US Fish & Wildlife).
