4-ALARM Building Fire Southwest Baltimore Sept. 20, 2013
Posted by: BCFDphotoman - 09-21-2013, 12:53 PM - Forum: Fire Scene Photos - Replies (22)

Around 8:00 PM Engine 30 and Truck 8 went out down the street from their quarters to investigate a report of smoke coming from a building.

When they arrived on the scene they had a 100' X 300' 2-story block building housing multiple businesses with smoke coming from the rear roof area.

They asked for the rest of the box to be struck out and they went to work on the fire. Battalion Chief 3 arrived and made it a working fire followed by a second alarm at 10:08 and a third alarm at 8:17. The fourth was struck at 8:46.

I didn't get home until about 2:30 AM and I don't think it had been put under control yet.

Here's a few shots until I get them all edited and put on my website:

I was hanging around the house on Wednesday when I heard a local 13 BOX go out for an auto fire just a few streets over from me.

As I'm closer to it than first due Engine 13 I decided to "respond" to it. As I drove through the neighborhood and turned onto the announced street, there it was:

  USA-Canada Trip 2013
Posted by: kieferfire - 09-21-2013, 09:03 AM - Forum: Apparatus Photos - Replies (167)

As I'm now in early retirement, we did another trip to Canada and the US from August 20 to September 17.

At August 20 we took the Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt/Germany nonstop to Seattle. I had prebooked a small SUV by Budget from the Seattle Airport. As I went to the Budget counter at the airport, no small SUV was available, no medium SUV either. So they gave me a monster Ford Expedition for the rate of a small SUV. So far, so good, but the advantage of a large car to a small rate was taken by the gas, that this monster consumed.

The first 3 nights we had in Vancouver/BC, where we did some sightseeing. With the great help of Terry Yip I was able to go out for buffing at one afternoon. Here are the results (specs in US-gallons):

Engine 18 in Vancouver is this 2007 Spartan Gladiator (Smeal Sirius) with Smeal bodywork. It has a 2000 gpm-pump and carries 500 gallons of water, 50 gallons A foam, and a CAFS system.

  Spec writing consultants
Posted by: roadman - 09-20-2013, 04:41 PM - Forum: Apparatus Scuttlebut - Replies (13)

Hi all,

We're in the beginning stages of planning a new piece of apparatus for our department. In the past, the chief ordered what he felt was right for our job. Most times that consisted of picking up the cheapest available demo on the lot of his preferred dealer.

Our current chief has been very good about soliciting input from the rank and file. We took delivery last year of a new engine that was built with a good deal of thought from a committee of guys on the job. We worked with a specific manufacturer to develop a spec.

I have seen and read a lot about the use of an apparatus consultant in developing a specification. Being involved in our last engine purchase, we have come to realize that it is very difficult for firefighters without any experience to write a comprehensive apparatus specification.

Can anyone weigh in on the use of a consultant - cost, worth it, not worth it, etc. Anyone have a recommendation? Keep in mind we're a municipal dept. in Massachusetts (read: no $$$) Wink

  Rockville,MD. Mack collapse unit

I'm sure some on here are familiar with the history of this rig, supposedly the 1st roll-off POD design in the US.

My questions are: what was the actual in-service date?

An ex-MCFRS and Rockville VFD member says I either have a faulty memory or bad info.

What is this rig's current status?

Thanks for any assistance...
