  Fire trucks and trains...
Posted by: mnsand - 10-03-2009, 09:45 PM - Forum: Fire Station Photos - Replies (63)

Since moving to Winchester, Virginia, I have had a good time exploring the local fire departments. The Winchester and Western Railroad runs very close to several fire departments within Frederick County, which surrounds Winchester.

This is Round Hill Station 15 in Frederick County. While heading out the other evening for dinner, we heard the train cross busy Route 50 West near my home. Once we caught up with the train, I knew it was heading towards Round Hill so me made a stop and waited the short time for it to arrive.

Obviously, the tracks go right across the front apron of Station 15. Hope the big one never hits when the train is coming through. I have been told that the fire department is rarely delayed waiting for a train to pass and most of the trains are shorter in length.

Hope you enjoy the photos.

1982 Mack CF LTI Tiller (ex Downey, CA)
Posted by: Guest - 09-24-2009, 05:12 PM - Forum: Member's Rigs/restoration Projects - Replies (19)

This truck just joined the family officially over the weekend, after running since day 1 out of Downey, California's Station 1. (The original factory photo is posted here, over in the tiller pics, even.) 27 years since it went in service, she still chugged the 220 miles home along Interstate 5 like a champ despite it being seemingly all uphill and toasty outside (mid to high 90s on the thermometer). A fun drive, and hardly any sunburn at all. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

The quasi-modernization retrofit is planned for the fall, to include new decals, reflective striping, replacing the strobes with LED warning lights (per current NFPA zone lighting) and re-loading equipment that would be found on such an apparatus.

1981 American LaFrance Water Chief (ex Moraga-Orinda Fire District, CA)
Posted by: Guest - 09-22-2009, 02:38 PM - Forum: Member's Rigs/restoration Projects - No Replies

A happy find at an auction yard, and a lack of local interest and low crowd turn-out over a Mothers Day weekend brought this home for the least I've yet to pay for a rig (and with a still fully functioning aerial to boot).

1981 American LaFrance Water Chief with the Century Series body, 75-foot aerial, 1500 gpm/300 gallon tank (was 500 gallons, but was cut down once in service for weight reasons). Replaced the front simulators (officer side lots), new graphics, applied the reflective striping, and reloaded equipment and hose.

As it stood on the auctioneer's lot:

1977 American LaFrance (formerly Garden City, NY)
Posted by: Guest - 09-22-2009, 02:31 PM - Forum: Member's Rigs/restoration Projects - No Replies

Too little sleep, a severance check with nowhere to go and an open eBay session later, I bought a fire truck.

1977 American LaFrance Century series pumper, marked as No. 9 when it arrived, 1500 gpm/500 gallon stainless steel tank. Originally was open-backed on the jump seat area, but later factory-refurbished to enclose the rear and add two more seats.

Moments after rolling off the lowboy from its trek from the East Coast to sunny California:

And more or less as it stands today (new graphics, changes to the warning lights, dropped the bell back on and reloaded it with equipment:
