At approximately 4:45 pm on Friday, June 15, 2017, units from the Mount Airy area of Carroll, Howard, Frederick and Montgomery counties were dispatched to a reported building fire in the area of Main Street and Farewood Lane. Units quickly arrived to find heavy fire showing from a commercial building. A second alarm was sounded, and the firefight continued for several hours.
My initial impression.
The building had served many purposes - a Chevy dealership (notice the sign), as well as currently a sign shop. So you know that there was some nasty stuff
burning.
Master streams on the ground, as well as ladder pipe ops. Obviously, this was a defensive operation.
While there is a hydrant infrastructure in the town of Mount Airy, tankers were necessary due to the significant draw on the water supply
infrastructure.
Firefighters from Lisbon VFC (Howard County) worked a handline on the Delta side near the Charlie corner.
Frederick County, MD, Truck 41 and Montgomery County, MD, Truck 735 on the Bravo/Charlie corner.
Truck 41's operator
Howard County, MD, Engine-Tanker 44 assisted in supplying Frederick Truck 41.
Fire showing on the Alpha/Bravo corner.
Frederick County, MD, Tower 23 operates their elevated master stream into a large volume of fire on the Alpha side, near the Bravo corner.
More of Tower 23. This time, closer to the middle of the building.
Truck 41's ladder pipe, as seen from side Alpha.
The Mount Airy Inn donated a LOT of good food. Not good for rehab, but surely very good food - Reuben sandwiches, pizzas, fries, tater tots, and a lot more.
Deputy State Fire Marshal Bruce Bouch (the PIO for the State Fire Marshal, as well as the volunteer PIO for one of the local VFDs) talks to the media.

Highrise Firefighting Question |

Related to the Grenfell Tower fire.
FIREFIGHTERS:
Has this tragedy prompted your department(s) to review your response procedures for highrise incidents? Has it prompted or do you anticipate it prompting your OFI personnel to a) examine all highrise apartment buildings for problems, b) review current fire codes and push for tougher codes and/or c) provide OFI with greater authority to remove residents in at-risk buildings if the risk is significant?
RESIDENTS OF HIGHRISE APARTMENTS:
Has this tragedy made you rethink where you live? Did it make you review and enhance yours and your neighbors responses to any incidents in your building? Does your building conduct regular tests of their alarm system, protocol, and have an occasional evacuation drill?
Just wondering what everyone's thoughts were on everything.

Grenfell Tower inferno - London, England |

First, big time kudos to everyone involved with helping the victims of this awful tragedy, from the London Fire Brigade to hundreds of people who came with food, clothing, etc. for people who lost everything.
Now the rant...
...I'm horrified to read that this was a preventable fire in so many ways. People reported safety concerns for YEARS and it all fell on deaf ears. WHY? Sure, complaining isn't going to bring back anyone who lost their lives, but this shouldn't have happened in the first place.
How many thousands of buildings around the world are clad in similar materials that could become the next chapter in this mess?

I have plans to go to Denmark this winter, probably late November or December. I'll be meeting up with a childhood friend who has been living in Copenhagen since the 80s so he should be able to help with the language and social customs. Obviously Denmark is on the agenda, and we have talked about adding some parts of Germany. The rest is pretty much see how it goes.
I know we have a couple of members across the Atlantic, and probably more than a few from the US who have shot apparatus over there.
Just looking for suggestions, advice etc. I don't know how photographers are viewed, how security varies, or how fire service culture may differ.
Obviously the time of year isn't the best for catching apparatus outside, but that is when I can get away.
Thanks
