Wasn't there a muli alarm job many years ago in that "flatiron" shaped building just behind the command unit?

Yes, 1801 Calvert St was the scene of a multialarm fire back in 91 I believe!!

Thanks Hawkins Point and fd141 for the memory jogger.

That has been a repeat block. Back around 1979 or 1980, 2611 Adams Mill (next-door – side D to the recent 4th Alarm in 2633 Adams Mill) had a good 2nd Alarm. Then, in 1985, 2630 Adams Mill, across the street next to the park, had a multiple fatality extra alarm basement fire. The basement had been subdivided into many illegal cubbyhole apartments. Fire twice returned to 2611 Adams Mill in 1987: a 2nd Alarm and Specials in June, and another 2nd Alarm with Specials in October. Just before Christmas in 1990, E-21, E-09, and Truck 9 were sent to investigate smoke in the area of Adams Mill and Lanier. That’s when E-21 found 1801 Calvert St., the “flat iron”, with the cockloft already rolling – 2nd Alarm and three (?) specials. And, of course, the blaze at 2633 Adams Mill Rd. NW early Monday morning, where multiple 50’ ground ladders were thrown in addition to everything else.

If I read the article in the Washington Post online correctly DCFD had to lay right around 7,000 feet of supply lines to get enough water to fight the 4 alarmer on Adams Mill Rd. Many of the watermains in DC are still ancient 6" mains. The department has bitched for years about needing to replace the old mains which are still a large part of the DC watermain system. The quasi public agency that handles the water system has a 20 year plan to replace them. I just wonder how many more 4 alarm fires (oups the fire at the Georgetown Library where lack of water due to mains was only a 3 alarmer) do you need to have in DC before they replace those damn watermains. Just goes to show that you can have the best firefighters, best rigs, best equipment, best dispatch setup and if you don't have a good water system you are plain screwed.
Amen. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sleep.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='-_-' />

I agree with Jerry, I am always looking forward to new additions to this string. Kevin and everyone else that has contributed have done a fantastic job. Having spent 14 years in the NOVA/DC area before moving back to Minnesota, the NOVA and DC posts here on Firepics keep me connected to one of the best parts of the country for apparatus.

May 1987 photo - Engine 27's pumper (S-112) at left; 27's wagon (S-161) to right.

Jerry and Dave -- here is what I have:

S-108 disposed?

S-110 not issued

S-111 not issued

S-112 not issued

S-113 not issued

S-123 TA memorial

S-164 funeral piece

I believe S-108 is the most recent piece disposed; it was a 1998 E\-One Cyclone II, originally E-26 (?); was last used as reserve E-64 briefly in 2007

Shop serials S-110 through 113 were not issued. When the department bought the E\-One wagons in 1998 – 1999, there was a break in the serial numbers from 109 to 114. As far as I know, the last units to carry serials 110 to 113 were the 1969 Ford/ Brucos (thread page 12, post #227).

S-123 Training Academy memorial; E\-One Cyclone formerly E-20 (see thread page 31, post #612)

S-164 is a 1985 E\-One Hurricane designated as the funeral pumper, but currently unused and hidden due to less than perfect paint job.
Kevin,

Thus far, you have an A+ on your pop quiz. I only have two more that I may have confused or reversed. Can you give me the facts on S-104 and S-105.

As always, many thanks - Jerry
